For Group 2 (Models GSH20B and GSH22B): If applicable, it is recommended to perform Special Instruction REHS4917 while the grapple is disassembled to perform this rework.

Rework Procedure

NOTE:
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.
Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

NOTE: Keep all parts clean from contaminants. Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life. Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause damage after prolonged operation. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

1. Remove the work tool from the host machine. Refer to operation and maintenance manual, "Work Tool Installation and Removal".

2. Remove the swivel. Refer to service manual disassembly and assembly, "Swivel ? Remove". Refer to service manual disassembly and assembly, "Hydraulic Rotator ? Remove" for the GSH orange peel grapples.

3. Disassemble the swivel. Refer to service manual Disassembly and Assembly, "Swivel ? Disassemble".

4. Remove seals (1).

5. For swivel designs A, B, D, and E, install new seals (1) in the seal grooves of the rotor (2). Refer to appropriate image.

- For swivel design C, install new seals (1) in the seal grooves of the stator (5). Refer to Image1.2.1.

NOTE: First install the rubber rectangular seal (3), then the seal ring (4). Refer to Image1.7.1.

NOTE: The seals may be folded into a "kidney" shape to ease installation. The seals are durable and will return to the original shape without damage. Refer to Image1.8.1.

6. Lubricate the sealing surface of the seal assembly (1) with the lubricant that is being sealed.

7. Assemble the swivel. Refer to service manual disassembly and assembly, "Swivel ? Assemble".

8. Install the swivel. Refer to service manual disassembly and assembly, "Swivel ? Install". Refer to service manual disassembly and assembly, "Hydraulic Rotator ? Install" for the GSH orange peel grapples.

9. Install the work tool onto the host machine. Refer to operation and maintenance manual, "Work Tool Installation and Removal".
