Engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may be harmful to your health. Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside. |
To prevent injury or death, never work under a machine while a test is being performed. |
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil. Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system. Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand. |
NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Test | Specification | Actual |
Vibratory frequency | 3700 ±200 rpm |
This test is used to determine if the vibratory system is operating at the specified frequency. This test indicates the condition of the vibratory pump and the vibratory motors.
Check that the vibratory relief pressure before the vibratory frequency is tested.
Note: Vibratory frequency is highly dependent on the temperature of the hydraulic oil and the vibratory shaft bearing. Drive the machine for up to 10 minutes with the vibratory system operating before this test is performed.
Note: The drum must be on loose uncompacted soil or isolated from the ground during this test. Failure to isolate the drum can result in damage to the test environment.
Note: Never operate the vibratory system when the machine is on concrete.

- Move engine start switch (4) into the START position. Release the switch when the engine starts.
- Operate the engine at low idle for a few minutes. Move throttle lever (3) to the HIGH-IDLE position to operate the engine in high idle.
- Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with Tool (D). Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches the test temperature listed in the "Specifications" Section.
- Move parking brake switch (2) to the OFF position.

Illustration 8 g06187616 Note: If the machine moves during this step, immediately move propel handle into theNEUTRAL position. The parking brakes must be repaired before this procedure is completed.
- Depress vibratory control switch (8) on the propel lever. Move the propel lever slightly out of the NEUTRAL position until the vibratory system starts.
- Use Tool (A) to determine the vibratory frequency of the front drum. The frequency should fall in the range listed in the "Specifications" Section.
- Use Tool (A) to determine the vibratory frequency of the rear drum. The frequency should fall in the range listed in the "Specifications" Section.
Note: The vibratory frequency of the rear drum may be slightly lower than the vibratory frequency of the front drum.
- Depress vibratory control switch (8) on the propel lever.
- Move propel lever (1) into the NEUTRAL position.
- Move throttle lever (3) into the LOW-IDLE position to operate the engine in low idle.
- Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.
- Move engine start switch (4) to the OFF position.
- If the vibratory frequency is outside the specified range, proceed as follows:
- If the rear vibratory frequency is greater than the front vibratory frequency, repair or replace the front vibratory motor.
- If the front vibratory frequency is in the specified range and the rear vibratory frequency is less than the specified range, troubleshoot the drum select solenoid. If the solenoid is functioning properly, repair or replace the rear vibratory motor.
- If the front and the rear vibratory frequency readings are both outside the specified range, check the flow of the vibratory pump. Refer to System Operation Testing and Adjusting, Gear Pump Flow (Vibratory) - Test.
- Remove Tool (B) from brake port on the front propel motor. Remove Tool (C) from brake hose (5). Connect the brake hose to the front propel motor.
- Remove Tool (B) from brake port on the rear propel motor. Remove Tool (C) from brake hose (6). Connect the brake hose to the rear propel motor.
