3618 Engine Caterpillar

After Starting Engine

Usage:

3618 2MW
After the engine is started and the warm-up is completed, the engine can be operated at low rpm and low load. The engine should reach operating temperature before the vessel enters open water.

Note: After the engine has been installed or rebuilt, it is important to follow a break-in procedure. It is also important to monitor the performance of the engine closely. See Special Instruction, REHS1321, "Break-In Procedure for New Cylinder Liners and Piston Rings".

  1. DO NOT apply a load to the engine or increase the rpm until the oil pressure gauge indicates a minimum of 160 kPa (23 psi) at low idle rpm. Check the gauges during the warm-up. Complete a walk-around inspection. Check for leaks and unusual noises.

  1. Ensure that the gauges are in the normal ranges for the engine rpm. After verifying that the engine systems are normal, engage the driven equipment. Begin operating the engine at low load. Continue to check the gauges and the driven equipment. Operate the engine at a low load until the engine reaches normal operating temperatures.

  1. After normal oil pressure and temperature are reached and the jacket water coolant temperature reaches 80 °C (176 °F), the engine may be operated at full load. Increase the load, as required.
