3304 AND 3306 MARINE ENGINES Caterpillar

General Information

Usage:

The Caterpillar 3304 Marine Engine is a 7.0 liters (425 cu. in.) displacement, 121 mm (4.75 in.) bore, 152 mm (6 in.) stroke, four stroke cycle, 4 cylinder engine. The firing order is 1-3-4-2 and the direction of rotation is counterclockwise, as viewed from the flywheel. The engine can be either naturally apsirated, turbocharged or turbocharged-aftercooled.

The Caterpillar 3306 Marine Engine is a 10.5 liters (638 cu. in.) displacement, 121 mm (4.75 in.) bore, 152 mm (6 in.) stroke, four stroke cycle, 6 cylinder engine. The firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4 and the direction of rotation is counterclockwise, as viewed from the flywheel. The engine can be either naturally aspirated, turbocharged or turbocharged-aftercooled.

A mechanical governor controls the fuel injection pump output to maintain the engine rpm selected by the operator.

Individual injection pumps, one for each cylinder, meter and pump fuel under high pressure to an injection valve for each cylinder. Automatic timing advance provides the best fuel injection timing over the full range of engine speed.

The cooling system consists of a gear driven centrifugal water pump, with one thermostat to regulate engine coolant temperature, an oil cooler and an expansion tank incorporating a shunt system.

The engine lubricating oil is supplied by a gear-type pump, which is both cooled and filtered. Bypass valves provide unrestricted flow of lubrication oil to the engine parts when oil viscosity is high, or if either the oil cooler or the oil filter elements should become clogged.
