3304 AND 3306 MARINE ENGINES Caterpillar

Before Starting the Engine

Usage:

Walk-Around Inspection

For maximum service life of your marine engine, make a thorough engine compartment inspection before starting the engine. Look for loose bolts and items such as fuel, oil or coolant leaks. Make repairs as necessary. Clean the engine compartment.

Look for loose bolts, worn fan belts and trash buildup. Remove trash buildup and have repairs made as needed.

Pre-Start Checks

1. Measure the crankcase oil level. The correct oil level is shown by the marks between the words FULL and ADD on the oil level gauge (dipstick).

The location of the ADD and FULL marks on the engine oil level gauge (dipstick) are determined by the tilt angle of the engine after it is installed in the hull.

If the ADD and FULL marks have not been stamped on the oil level gauge (dipstick), contact your Caterpillar dealer.

2. Check the coolant level with the engine stopped and cold. Remove the filler cap slowly to relieve pressure.

Maintain the coolant level to within 13 mm (1/2 inch) of the bottom of the fill pipe. Install the filler cap.

3. Observe the air cleaner service indicator (if equipped). Service the air cleaner when the yellow diaphragm enters the red zone or the red piston locks in the visible position.

------ WARNING! ------

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

------WARNING!--------
4. Drain water from the water separator (if equipped).
5. Disconnect the battery charger, if it is attached.

6. Measure the marine gear oil level.

If the marine gear dipstick has not been marked, drain the marine gear, install the drain plug and add 4.7 liters (5 quarts) for MG506, 8.5 liters (9 quarts) for MG509 Shallow Case and 13.2 liters (14 quarts) for MG509 Deep Case. Allow the oil level to stabilize and mark the dipstick FULL.

Start the engine and operate the marine gear. Measure the oil level with the marine transmission in neutral. Add additional oil to bring oil level up between the FULL mark and 25.4 mm (1.00 inch) above the FULL mark on the dipstick.

If the engine has not been run for several weeks, fuel may have drained and allowed air into the filter housing. When fuel filters have been changed, some air space will be left in the housing.

In these instances, prime the fuel system.
