Usage:
Lube Oil System
Checking Oil Pressure Gauge Reading
After starting and during operation, frequently observe the oil pressure gauge. If the gauge indicator registers below "NORMAL", or if the indicator fluctuates, check the oil level and take corrective measures.
Checking Oil Level
Check the oil level with the engine idling. Oil level must be between the ADD and FULL marks on the oil level gauge. Add oil as required. See LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE CHART for proper oil.
Checking Oil Filter Change Indicator
When the engine is operating under full load with the oil at operating temperature, observe the position of the red plunger of the indicator. When the plunger rises approximately half the height of the plastic window, install new oil filter elements.
D379 AND D398 ENGINES (D399 ENGINE IS SIMILAR)
Draining Crankcase Lube Oil
With engine stopped and oil warm:
- 1. Wipe dirt from each oil filter housing end cover.
- 2. Remove vent plug from each cover.
- 3. Open the oil filter housing drain valve.
- 4. Remove the oil cooler drain plug.
- 5. Remove the oil pan drain plug.
Oil Filter Elements
Installing New Oil Filter Elements
- 1. Drain the oil filter housing.
- 2. Remove oil filter housing covers.
- 3. Remove all oil filter elements from the right side (inlet side). Push the used elements through the housing from left to right (as viewed from the flywheel).
NOTICE |
---|
Do not push the elements from right to left. This will scrape unfiltered oil into the filtered oil passage in the engine. |
- 4. Wipe the filter housing from left to right.
- 5. Install the cover on the right side of the housing.
- 6. Install new filter elements and the left cover.
- 7. Close the housing drain valve.
- 8. Fill the filter housing and oil cooler with oil: Add the oil through the vent plug opening. See the LUBRICATION AND MAINTENANCE CHART for proper oil to use.
- 9. Fill the crankcase to the FULL mark on the oil level gauge.
- 10. Install all vent plugs which were removed.
- 11. Start the engine; reduce engine speed to low idle, and observe the oil pressure gauge reading.
If oil pressure does not register, the low oil pressure shutoff control will stop the engine in approximately 7 seconds.
If the low oil pressure shutoff control stops the engine, investigate the cause and make repairs before attempting to restart.
- 12. Allow the engine to reach operating temperatures at low idle.
- 13. Check the oil level. Oil level should be between the ADD mark and the FULL mark with the engine running at low idle. Add oil if necessary.
Breathers
Cleaning Breather-D379 and D398 Engines
- 1. Remove the breather mounting bolts. Lift off the breather.
- 2. Wash the breather in clean solvent.
- 3. Install the breather.
Cleaning Breathers-D399 Engines
- 1. Loosen the front hose clamp.
- 2. Remove the breather mounting bolts. Lift off the breathers.
- 3. Remove and inspect the upper and lower hoses from the breathers.
- 4. Wash the breathers in clean solvent.
- 5. Install the breathers and the lower hose. Install the upper hose. Tighten all clamps.
