941 & 951 TRACK TYPE LOADERS Caterpillar

Operating Techniques

Usage:

Loading From a Stockpile

1. Shift speed selector to first speed forward.

2. Position bucket so that bottom is level with ground.

3. Drive forward to force bucket into material.

4. Tilt bucket back as machine moves forward.

5. Raise bucket against stockpile.

6. Manuever into loading or travel position as soon as bucket is full.

Rock bucket back and forth with tilt control when material is hard to penetrate.

Traveling

Travel in reverse when carrying a load down a steep incline. Travel forward when going uphill. Keep bucket low whenever possible.

Dozing

When bulldozing keep the bucket bottom parallel to the ground. DO NOT BULLDOZE WITH THE BUCKET IN THE DUMP POSITION.

Dumping

Use the bucket stops for maximum dumping angle. DO NOT ALLOW THE TILT CYLINDERS TO FULLY EXTEND.

NOTICE

Whenever the loader lift arms are near or below the horizontal plane, it is possible to extend the tilt cylinders to their fullest extent before bucket stops make contact. This may damage the cylinders and rods if pressure is applied to the cylinders or bucket.

NOTE: Whenever the tilt cylinders are fully extended the rod piston will contact the forward end of the tilt cylinder. If tilt cylinders must be fully extended (as in the loading of some hoppers), damage to the cylinders and rods can be prevented by making sure that the rod pistons contact the forward end of the cylinders with a very soft impact.

Digging

Avoid excessive down pressure on the bucket to prevent loss of traction.

Use bucket teeth when working in hard material.

Loading Hauling Units

1. Adjust kick-out to raise bucket just high enough to clear sides of hauling unit.

2. Position hauling unit at best angle to reduce machine turning and travel. Travel distance should be long enough for bucket to reach dump height without pausing.
3. Position to dump in center of hauler body. If hauler is 2 buckets or more in length, dump from front to rear.
4. Pull tilt control lever back to dump bucket.
5. For controlled dumping, engage tilt control lever for a short period, then return to HOLD. Repeat until bucket is empty.
6. Shake bucket to loosen sticky material. Move tilt control back and forth quickly, allowing tilt arms to strike stops.
7. If possible, keep the wind to your back when dumping. This will help keep dust out of your eyes.
8. Tilt bucket back and lower to loading position while moving to loading area.

NOTICE

Shaking the bucket by allowing the tilt arms to strike the stops unnecessarily and repetitively will result in accelerated wear and high maintenance cost of the loader linkage.

Excavating (Soft Material)

1. Tilt bucket for a slight downward or digging angle at the cutting edge.

2. Apply down pressure to bucket as machine travels forward. Return lift control to HOLD when desired depth is reached.

3. Maintain level cut by raising and lowering bucket, as required, while moving forward.

4. Tilt bucket back and raise to carry height when full.

Excavating (Hard Material)

1. Tilt bucket to digging angle.

2. Move forward and apply down pressure to bucket. Return lift control to HOLD when desired depth is reached.

3. Tilt bucket back to maintain only a slight digging angle. Tilt bucket up and down to force material into bucket.

4. Tilt bucket back and raise to carry height when full.

Loading From Bank

1. Start loading at base of bank and follow up the face.

2. Remove overhangs and watch for sliding material.

Quarry Work

Place small rock in bottom of hauling unit body, then add large rock. Control dumping to reduce shock loads to hauling unit body.

To move single large rocks, it is safer, and easier, to drag them out with the bucket instead of attempting to carry them.

Multi-purpose Bucket

Bowl Position Indicator - bowl open.

Bowl Position Indicator - bowl closed.

Bucket Position Indicator - bucket positioned for use as a clamp or clam shell.

Bucket Position Indicator - bucket positioned for use a scraper.

Bucket Position Indicator - bucket positioned for use as a bulldozer.

When using in the same manner as a standard bucket, use regular loading techniques. Dump by either tilting bucket or opening bowl.

1. To use as a clamp or clam shell bucket, position bucket over material or object.

2. Open bowl and lower bucket into material or over object.

3. Close bowl and lift to carrying height.
4. Open and close bowl to dislodge sticky material when dumping.
5. Lower bucket to just above ground or bottom of hauling unit bed when dumping large objects.

For bulldozing, open bowl and lower to the ground. Tilt to best angle to move material being worked.

To use as a scraper, open bowl slightly and lower to the ground. Tilt bowl back and close when full.

Ripping

Use FIRST speed for most ripping operations. Start with one shank. Rip downhill when possible. (Always use center shank in one shank ripping.)

If material is penetrated easily and breaks up satisfactorily, add shanks rather than increase speed.

Normally rip as deep as possible. It may be necessary to rip at partial depth to remove material in its natural layers.

Rip cuts for scraper loading in the direction the scraper will load.

Keep several inches of loose material on top of the unripped formation to cushion the tractor and improve traction.

Cross rip only where one way ripping will not adequately loosen the formation.
