Fuel System Primary Filter (Water Separator) Element - Replace

Usage:

323D3 FEY

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death may result from failure to adhere to the following procedures.

Fuel leaked or spilled onto hot surfaces or electrical components can cause a fire.

Clean up all leaked or spilled fuel. Do not smoke while working on the fuel system.

Turn the disconnect switch OFF or disconnect the battery when changing fuel filters.

NOTICE

Do not fill the fuel filters with fuel before installing the fuel filters. The fuel will not be filtered and could be contaminated. Contaminated fuel will cause accelerated wear to fuel system parts.

The primary filter/water separator is located behind the right rear access door.

  1. Open the rear access door on the right side of the machine.

  2. Turn drain valve (3) counterclockwise in order to open. The drain valve is located on the bottom of the water separator.

Note: Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "General Hazard Information" for information that pertains to containing fluid spillage.

  3. Drain the water and the sediment into a suitable container.

Note: Dispose of used fluids according to local regulations.

  4. Close the drain valve (3).

  5. Remove the water sensor (4) from the primary filter.

  6. Remove primary filter (2). Properly discard the used filter.

  7. Clean the mounting base (1).

  8. Lubricate the seal of the new filter (2) with clean diesel fuel.

  9. Install the new filter (2) by hand.

Note: Instructions for the installation of the filter are printed on the side of each Cat spin-on filter. For non-Cat filters, refer to the installation instructions that are provided by the supplier of the filter.

  10. Tighten the filter according to the instructions that are printed on the filter.

Note: You may need to use a strap type wrench or a suitable tool in order to turn the filter to the amount that is required for final installation. Make sure that the installation tool does not damage the filter.

  11. If equipped, ensure clean and serviceable threads on the fuel bowl.

  12. Install the water sensor (4) in the primary filter. Torque the sensor (4) to 2.5 ± 0.5 N·m (22.1 ± 4.4 lb in).

Note: Be sure to not over torque the sensor in excess of torque specifications. Damage may occur to sensor.

The sensor is a snug fit, this equates to 1 to 1.5 turns after you start feeling the resistance when tightening it by hand.

  13. Open the fuel shutoff valve.

  14. If equipped, ensure that the sensor (4) is in the correct position and install the wiring harness.

  15. Close the access door.
