Crankshaft - Remove and Install

Start By:

  1. Remove crankshaft pulley.

  2. Remove the flywheel housing.

  3. Remove front crankshaft seal.

  4. Remove the oil pan.


NOTICE

Keep all parts clean from contaminants.

Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.


Note: To prevent engine damage, do not alter or deface the fractured mating surfaces of connecting rod and cap. Do not reverse the connecting rod cap location.

Note: To prevent engine damage, do not push fractured surface of connecting rod.

Note: To prevent engine damage, keep the fractured mating surfaces of the connecting rod and cap clean and free of lint and debris. Do not allow the mating surfaces to rest on other surfaces. Do not bump the mating surfaces or drop the connecting rod or cap. Doing so could chip or mar the mating surfaces, causing incorrect mating of rod and cap.

  1. Remove bolts (1) and bolts (2). Remove oil suction tube assembly (3).

  2. Remove bolts (4) and discard. Install Tooling (A) and attach suitable lifting device. Remove bolts (5) and discard. Remove cylinder block bed (6). The weight of cylinder block bed (6) is approximately 84 kg (185 lb).

  3. Make index marks for location and orientation of bearings (7). Remove bearings (7) from cylinder block bed (6).

  4. Make index marks for location and orientation of connecting rod caps (9). Remove bolts (8) and connecting rod caps (9).

  5. Remove bearings (10).

  6. Attach a suitable lifting device to crankshaft (11). Remove crankshaft (11) from cylinder block (12). The weight of crankshaft (11) is approximately 126 kg (278 lb).

  7. Make index marks for location and orientation of bearings (13). Remove bearings (13).

Installation Procedure

  1. Install crankshaft (11) in the reverse order of removal.


      NOTICE

      Ensure that the crankshaft main bearing tabs engage with the grooves in the block and the crankshaft main bearing cap.


    1. Apply clean engine oil to the face of the bearings (13) before installing. Ensure that the back surface of the bearings is clean and free of oil and debris.

    2. Apply Tooling (B) to the surface of cylinder block bed (6) prior to installation.

    3. Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 70 ± 4 N·m (52 ± 34 lb ft).

    4. Tighten bolts (8) an extra 60° ± 3°.

    5. Install new bolts (5).

    6. Tighten bolts (5) to a torque of 160 ± 8 N·m (118 ± 6 lb ft) in the order shown in Illustration9.

    7. Tighten bolts (5) to a primary torque angle of 90 degrees ± 5 degrees in the order shown in Illustration9.

    8. Tighten bolts (5) to a secondary torque angle of 60 degrees ± 3 degrees in the order shown in Illustration9.

    9. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque of 30 ± 2 N·m (266 ± 18 lb in) in the order shown in Illustration 10.

    10. Tighten bolts (4) to a torque angle of 60 degrees ± 3 degrees in the order shown in Illustration11 .
