The article, "Comparison And Applications Of Six And Eight Counterweight Crankshafts," tells which crankshafts are adaptable to which 3208 Engines. Engineering has changed its recommendation. According to Engineering, a ten-hole crankshaft must be used in all turbocharged engine arrangements. All naturally-aspirated engine arrangements including the 176 kW (210 horsepower) arrangements can, if desired, use an eight-hole crankshaft without modification of the crankshaft. There are three crankshaft designs currently used for all 3208 Engines. The crankshafts have either six or eight counterweights and either eight or 10 bolt holes for the flywheel.

Service personnel do not clearly understand which crankshaft is adaptable to which 3208 Engine.

The number of counterweights, either six or eight, has no effect on the operation characteristics of the crankshaft. But a crankshaft used in engines with a rating of 156.7 kW (210 horsepower) or more, including all turbocharged engines, must have a 10-bolt flange. Ten bolts must be used to have enough strength at the flywheel-to-crankshaft junction.

Modifications can be made to permit use of any of the three crankshafts in all 3208 Engine applications. The modifications are the addition of bolt holes either to the crankshaft or to the flywheel. See the chart and the illustration.
