空对空后冷器系统中没有冷却液流量。 该系统与水套水冷却系统相隔离。

新鲜空气通过空气滤清器 (1) 吸入涡轮增压器压气机 (3) 中。 空气得到压缩,并且空气由于压缩而变热。 压缩后的空气流过后冷器 (6) 的散热片,在散热片中,压缩空气由来自风扇的空气流量冷却。 经过冷却和压缩的空气密度变大,从而使发动机 (2) 能够燃烧更多的燃油,因此可提供更大的功率。 发动机的排气流过涡轮增压器涡轮机 (4),为驱动涡轮增压器压气机提供能量。

在水套水冷却系统中,水泵 (5) 迫使冷却液经过发动机冷却液通道。 冷却液循环通过发动机,从而完成发动机与冷却液间的换热。 加热后的冷却液流过散热器 (7)。 来自风扇的空气流过后冷器及其周围,以冷却散热器中的冷却液。 冷却液通过水泵抽回。
