Engine Shutdown While Idling

Usage:

C27 AT4
Use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active. Access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring Parameters" for information about engine events.

Table 1
Engine Event
J1939 Code and Description  Conditions that Generate the Code  System Response
593-1 Engine Idle Shutdown has Shutdown Engine : Low - most severe (3)  The engine has been idling for an extended amount of time.  The shutdown feature notifies the operator that the engine has been idling for an extended period.
The code is logged.
593-18 Engine Idle Shutdown has Shutdown Engine : Low - moderate severity (2)  The engine is preparing to shut down due to extended idle time.  The code is logged.
593-31 Engine Idle Shutdown has Shutdown Engine  The engine is shutting down.  An alarm will sound.
The code is logged.

Probable Causes

Normal Operation

  • Extended idle time

Recommended Actions

Engine at idle speed

This condition is normal operation. The engine has been idling for an extended amount of time and the Electronic Control Module (ECM) will shut down the engine.

The "Extended Engine Idle Shutdown" parameter in Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) can be disabled. The amount of time before engine is shut down can then be configured.
