C27 and C32 Tier 4 Engines Caterpillar

Engine Overspeeds

Usage:

C27 AT4
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot an engine overspeed or use this procedure if the following event code is active. Access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Engine Monitoring Parameters" for information about engine events.

Table 1
Engine Event
J1939 Code and Description  Conditions that Generate the Code  System Response
190-0 Engine Speed : High - most severe (3)  The engine rpm exceeded the trip point for the preset delay time.  The code is logged.
190-15 Engine Speed : High - least severe (1)  The code is logged.
The code requires factory passwords to be cleared.

Probable Causes

Steep Grades

  • Proceeding down steep grades (if applicable)

Air System

  • Proper operation of the turbocharger

  • Intake air

Recommended Actions

Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in the following order:

Proceeding Down Steep Grades (If Applicable)

There may be a necessity to engage the engine retarder on a steep grade.

Note: The operator must understand the proper operation of the machine during use of the engine retarder.

Note: Not all applications have engine retarders.

Proper Operation of the Turbocharger

Check for proper operation of the turbocharger. Check for oil that may be leaking into the air inlet.

Intake Air

Check for combustible gases in the surrounding atmosphere. Do not operate the engine in an environment with combustible gases.
