Location of the Flywheel Inverter Assembly

(1) Flywheel Inverter Assembly

The Flywheel Inverter assembly is located in the upper right side of the flywheel cabinet. When online, the Flywheel Inverter is used to convert the DC voltage to AC Voltage in order to keep the flywheel at speed. During discharge, the Flywheel Inverter assembly converts the 3-phase AC voltage from the flywheels in order to keep the DC Bus charged. The regulated DC voltage is used by the Inverter Cabinet where the energy is converted back to AC voltage to supply the customer load.

Each cabinet for the flywheel contains two inverter assemblies. Each Inverter assembly is made up of three Inverter modules. Each complete Inverter assembly includes the following components:

  • Flywheel Inverter module

  • DC capacitors

  • heat sink

Illustration 2 shows a complete Flywheel Inverter module.

Removal Procedure

Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, RENR7654, "Internal Component Preremoval Steps (Flywheel Cabinet)" in order to shut down the system and gain access to internal components.

NOTICE

Electrostatic discharge can damage integrated circuits or semiconductors if you touch bus connector pins. When not in use, keep the module in the static-shield bag. Follow these guidelines when you handle any module:

Touch a grounded object to discharge static potential.

Wear an approved wrist-strap grounding device.

Do not touch the bus connector or connector pins.

Do not touch circuit components inside the module.

If available, use a static-safe work station.
