Usage:
All Caterpillar Products
Description of Change: A new lock system will be put in effect for all locks except the disconnect switch on Caterpillar products. When the new system is completely in effect, one standard key will fit all door and compartment locks, padlocks, and lock-type electrical switches (except the disconnect switch) on all Caterpillar products. The only separate key then needed will be the disconnect switch key. This will make it possible for dealers and customers to keep equipment locked (locks fastened) for protection without the use of a large number of keys. Formerly, a separate key was needed for each type of lock or padlock. The first element of the new system to be used is the padlock, which is in effect on most models of track-type tractors and pipelayers. The padlock is used on both the tool box and the literature compartment on machines that do not have a cab as standard equipment. For cab doors and other compartments, the new lock cylinders will be put in effect as future changes are made. The padlock will also be released for other models during future changes.
The design characteristics of the new keys, locks, and padlocks permit easy identification, either visually or by feel, and give good service life, with protection against dirt and freezing. See the topic "Design Characteristics".
On machines that have the new padlock, the customer's two keys are in an envelope in the literature compartment. This makes it necessary for the dealer's serviceman to have an extra key to open the padlock on the compartment for access to the customer's keys.
Adaptable To: The new 5P8500 Single System (Universal) Key is directly adaptable to all machines that have the new locks. The new 5P8502 Padlock Group (including a padlock and two 5P8500 Keys) can be used in place of the former 8S7949 Padlock Group in most current applications if desired. The former padlock group is still available for parts service.
DESIGN CHARACTERISTICS: Identification of the new padlock can easily be made by the black color of the padlock body, and by the Caterpillar corporate symbol which is "cast into" (made as part of) the padlock body. This symbol is also on the head of the new 5P8500 key.
The new 5P8500 Key is a double-edge design, but is not symmetrical (the same on both sides), so it can be put into the lock only one way. This design extends the service life of the lock components, but correct alignment of the key with the lock cylinder is necessary. For assistance in alignment of the key, marks have been put on the keys and the locks. The head of the key has a notch on one edge, and the end of the lock cylinder has a mark of the same shape at one end of the slot (opening for the key). When these marks are in alignment, the key will fit into the lock. On lock cylinders used in cab doors and similar applications, the alignment mark is raised (pushed up), so it can be felt. On the lock cylinder in the padlock, the alignment mark is on the same side as the corporate symbol in the padlock body, which can also be felt. Alignment of these marks with the notch in the head of the key will permit the key to be correctly fitted into the lock either visually or by feel.
