Stopping the Engine

Usage:

558 F5G

NOTICE

Stopping the engine immediately after working under load, can result in overheating and accelerated wear of the engine components.

Refer to the following stopping procedure, to allow the engine to cool, and to prevent excessive temperatures in the turbocharger center housing and DEF injector.

NOTICE

Never turn the battery disconnect switch to the OFF position while the engine is running. Serious damage to the electrical system may result.

Positions of the engine key switch are indicated by a film that surrounds the engine key switch.

Your machine may be equipped with a Type 1 film or your machine may be equipped with a Type 2 film. Both the Type 1 film and the Type 2 film are shown below.

  1. Park the machine on level ground. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Stopping the Machine" for the recommended procedure.

  2. While the machine is stopped, run the engine for 5 minutes at low idle. Idling the engine allows hot areas of the engine to cool gradually.

Note: If the "Regen Active" indicator is illuminated, do not shut off the engine. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Monitoring System" for more information on indicators.

  3. Turn the engine key switch to OFF position (2) and remove the key.

Note: The engine may delay before completely shutting down. Delayed engine shutdowns aid in cooling the engine and after-treatment components.

Delayed Engine Shutdown (If Enabled)

The Delayed Engine Shutdown allows the engine to run for a time after the engine key switch is turned to the OFF position to cool the engine and system components. The key may be removed from the engine key switch.

Note: The DEF purge process will run for 2 minutes once the engine is shut down and must complete. The purge process may occur during delayed engine shutdown. Do not turn off battery disconnect switch during the purge process. Do not turn off the battery power disconnect switch until the battery disconnect switch indicator lamp has turned off. If the purge process does not complete, a diagnostic code will become active.

Note: There may be regulations that define the requirements for the operator and/or support personnel to be present when the engine is running.

------ WARNING! ------

Leaving the machine unattended when the engine is running may result in personal injury or death. Before leaving the machine operator station, neutralize the travel controls, lower the work tools to the ground and deactivate all work tools, and place the lever for the hydraulic lockout control in the LOCKED position.

Note: Leaving the engine unattended while running may result in property damage in the event of a malfunction.

Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position.

Delayed Engine Shutdown - The delayed engine shutdown indicator will illuminate or the following text will be displayed, ENGINE COOLDOWN ACTIVE.

Delayed engine shutdown will run whenever the exhaust temperature is above a threshold at engine shutdown. Delayed engine shutdown will run for a minimum of 76 seconds and will continue to run until the engine and system components are cooled.

Note: At any time during a delayed engine shutdown, the engine key switch may be turned to ON position (3). The engine may be placed back into service.

For more information on the engine key switch, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Operator Controls".

Immediate Engine Shutdown (Type 1)

When the operator determines that an immediate engine shutdown is necessary, and needs to disable the delayed engine shutdown feature, take the following action. Turn the engine key switch to STOP position (1) and hold the engine key switch in that position for 1 second.

Note: A warning message and/or an audible alarm will be initiated if Delayed Engine Shutdown Override is used. A fault code will be logged for improper engine shutdown if exhaust temperature is above a limit.

Note: If Delayed Engine Shutdown Override is used repeatedly, then there is risk of premature engine and aftertreatment component damage. Use for Emergency Situations only.

For more information on the engine key switch, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Operator Controls".

Immediate Engine Shutdown (Type 2)

When the operator determines that an immediate engine shutdown is necessary, and needs to disable the delayed engine shutdown feature, take the following action. Turn the engine key switch to DELAYED ENGINE SHUTDOWN OVERRIDE position (1A) and hold the engine key switch in that position for 1 second.

Engine Stop Control

Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position. If the engine does not stop, perform the following procedure.

  1. The switch is located inside the left front access door.

    Illustration 4g01048511

  2. Lift cover (1).

  3. Push switch (2) upward. This should stop the engine.

Note: Use the engine start switch to stop the engine first. Use the engine stop control as an alternate method to stop the engine.

  4. Return the switch to the original position. The engine will be enabled to start.

Note: Do not operate the machine again until the malfunction has been corrected.

  5. Use the method that follows if the previous steps do not stop the engine.

Stop the Engine if an Electrical Malfunction Occurs

Turn the engine start switch to the OFF position. If the engine does not stop, perform the procedure that follows.

The fuel shutoff valve is located on the water separator.

Shut off the fuel supply by turning the fuel shutoff valve clockwise. The engine will stop after consuming the fuel in the fuel line. The engine may continue to run for a few minutes.

Repair the engine before you restart the engine. The fuel system may need to be primed. See Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Fuel System - Prime" for instructions.
