This Program must be administered as soon as possible. When reporting the repair, use "PI10719" as the Part Number and "7751" as the Group Number, "56" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and "T" as the SIMS Description Code.
Exception: If the repair is done after failure, use "PI10719" as the Part Number, "7751" as the Group Number, "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code, and "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.



PROBLEM

Certain 324D, 325D, 330D, and 345D Excavators may have the left hand rear cab window improperly tempered. Glass that has not been properly tempered will splinter when broken instead of shattering into small pieces, resulting in the potential for serious injury or death.

In order to allow equitable parts availability to all participating dealers, please limit your initial parts order to not exceed 40% of dealership population. This is an initial order recommendation only, and the ultimate responsibility for ordering the total number of parts needed to satisfy the program lies with the dealer.

ACTION REQUIRED

Remove the existing left hand rear window in the cab. Replace with a new piece of correctly tempered glass. Use the following rework instructions to complete the procedure.

It is recommended to have a outside vendor glass company perform this rework.

Refer to Special Instruction, SEHS9824, "Replacing Bonded Windows" for additional information.

SAFETY - PRODUCT IMPROVEMENT PROGRAM FOR REPLACING THE LEFT HAND REAR CAB GLASS

MODELS INVOLVED - 324D, 325D, 330D, and 345D Excavators

Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:

The existing left hand rear cab glass needs to be replaced with a properly tempered glass on the products listed below. The left hand rear glass in the cab may have improper tempered. This may cause the glass to splinter rather than shatter when broken. The splintered glass may cause injury or death if the window is broken. You will not be charged for the service performed.

Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediately to schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time required to complete this service.

Please refer the dealer to their Service Letter dated 07Oct2008 when scheduling this service.

Rework Procedure


 
It is recommended that an outside vendor is used to complete this repair.

The following adhesives should be used for this repair:
SIKA 206 G + P Primer
SIKA Activator Primer
SIKA Tack-Plus Booster Adhesive
 
NOTE: Use an oscillating cutting tool or equivalent to remove the cab glass. Refer to Image 1.2.1.

1. Starting at the top of the window inside the cab, cut the adhesive then remove the left hand rear cab window. Take care not to damage the glass-mounting surface of the cab.

2. After the window is removed, remove any loose pieces of urethane. Maintain a smooth surface finish at a height equal to the height of the metal buttons. Refer to Image 1.4.1 for example of metal button locations.

3. Lay the new piece of glass on a protective surface with the frit around the border facing up. Apply the 175-2934 primer to the frit around the window. Use a foam brush to apply the 121-3911 primer directly to the ceramic frit around the window. Wait at least 5 minutes before installing the primed window to the adhesive.

4. Apply a urethane bead over the existing urethane on the cab. The bead should maintain an even thickness of 1/2 inch for proper sealing.

5. Install the new cab glass by first setting the bottom and then centering the glass in the opening. Push on the glass to ensure even seating against the buttons.

6. Apply tape to keep the window secured in the opening for a minimum of 4 hours. The urethane will cure in 12 to 24 hours. Take care not slam the cab door for 24 hours. The excessive air pressure in the cab from slamming the door could loosen the window.
