Left Front Camshaft Housing

Usage:

Remove Left Front Camshaft Housing

preparatory steps:

a) remove valve covers

b) remove fuel transfer pump

1. Rotate the crankshaft to top center compression stroke No. 1 piston. See LOCATING TOP CENTER COMPRESSION POSITION FOR NO. 1 PISTON in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.

2. On Marine engines only, drain engine coolant and remove the water cooled exhaust manifold front water line.

3. Remove outer fuel injection line clamps, and disconnect lines from camshaft housing.

4. Remove camshaft housing end cover. Remove the bolts (2), nuts (1), and locks.

5. Remove bolts (5), lock and retainer. Loosen collar retaining clamps (4). Slide collars away from housing.

6. Remove glow plug wiring harness (3). Disconnect harness from camshaft housing.

7. Remove inner fuel injection lines (6). Install plugs or caps on exposed fuel lines and fittings.

8. Adjust all valve lash adjustment screws for maximum valve clearance.

9. Remove camshaft housing-to-cylinder head retaining bolts (7).

10. Install two 3/8"-16NC forged eyebolts in camshaft housing. Attach a hoist, and remove the camshaft housing-weight 120 lbs. (54 kg).

NOTICE

To prevent piston and valve interference do not rotate the crankshaft with left front camshaft housing removed and the left rear camshaft housing installed. Damage to the engine may result.

Install Left Front Camshaft Housing

1. Align the phasing gear timing marks, and install timing pin in the inlet camshaft timing slot.

NOTICE

To prevent piston and valve interference, do not rotate crankshaft with left front camshaft housing removed and the left rear camshaft housing installed. Also, do not rotate crankshaft with right rear camshaft housing removed and the right front camshaft housing installed. Damage to the engine may result.

2. Check to be sure that crankshaft is at TC compression position No. 1 piston. The crankshaft will be in this position if:

a. The timing pin can be inserted into slot in fuel injection pump camshaft as outlined in FUEL INJECTION PUMP CAMSHAFT TIMING in TESTING AND ADJUSTING.
b. The timing pins for the right bank camshafts can be installed into their timing slots (if housings haven't been disturbed).
c. The timing pins for the left rear camshaft can be installed into their timing slots (if housing hasn't been disturbed).

NOTICE

If above procedure relating to camshaft timing marks, timing pins, and crankshaft position is not followed, damage to the engine may result.

3. Attach a hoist, and position camshaft housing on engine making sure the exhaust camshaft gear and drive gear are meshed.

4. Install camshaft housing mounting bolts.

5. Remove protective caps and install inner fuel injection lines (1). Connect outer fuel injection lines to camshaft housing. Tighten all fuel line retaining nuts to 30 ± 5 lb. ft. (4,1 ± 0,7 mkg).

6. Position collars (2) on the camshafts. Install retainer, lock and bolts. Tighten collar retaining clamps.

7. Install glow plug wiring harness. Install camshaft housing end cover (3).

8. On Marine engines only, install the water cooled exhaust manifold front water line and install engine coolant.

9. Remove all timing pins from their timing slots. Install timing pins in their respective storage positions.

concluding steps:

a) adjust valve clearance

b) install fuel transfer pump

c) install valve covers
