Permanent Fault Logging

Usage:

3512 1LM
When the electronic control module (ECM) generates a diagnostic code, the code will usually be logged in the permanent memory of the ECM.

The ECM has an internal clock which records the operating hours of the ECM. When a diagnostic code is logged, following information is recorded with the code:

  • The hour of the first occurrence of the code

  • The hour of the last occurrence of the code

  • The number of occurrences of the code

If the code is generated more than two times, the ECM does not record the hour of each occurrence. Instead, the ECM records a range for the hours of occurrence. This information is useful for troubleshooting intermittent problems.

Caterpillar electronic service tools are used for the following service procedures:.

  • Obtaining information about the logged codes

  • Deleting the information from the memory of the ECM

Some diagnostic codes require a factory password in order to be deleted. Diagnostic codes that do not require a factory password will be automatically erased from the memory if the codes do not recur within 100 hours of operation.
