CB7 and CB8 Asphalt Compactor Propel System Caterpillar

Parking Brake - Test

Usage:

CB7 AT5

------ WARNING! ------

Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.

Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from rotating and moving parts.

Moving fan blades and moving parts will throw or cut any object or tool that falls or is pushed into them.

Make sure no one is working on, underneath or close to an engine that is running. Make sure the area is free of personnel.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  6. If the machine being tested has split drums, disconnect brake hose assemblies (9) at the four motors. Use Tool (A) to cap the port. Use Tool (D) to plug the hose. If the machine being tested has solid drums, disconnect the brake supply hose assembly at the propel motors for both drums. Use Tool (C) to cap the port. Use Tool (D) to plug the hose.

  7. Use a suitable lifting device to lift the drums off the ground. The weight of the machine is approximately 8720 kg (19224 lb).

  8. Move engine start switch (8) to the START position. Release the switch when the engine starts.

  9. Place the engine in high idle.

  10. Operate the hydraulic system until the oil temperature reaches the test temperature of 45 °C (113 °F).

  11. Use propel speed range switch (10) to shift the propel motors into the HIGH SPEED position.

Note: Two things indicate when the propel motors are in the HIGH SPEED position. First, "Propel Mode High" will appear on the display. Second, two LEDs next to propel speed range switch (10) will be illuminated.

  12. Use speed control switch (11) to set the propel speed to 20 percent.

Note: Two things indicate when the propel speed is set to 50 percent. First, "Speed Control % 100" will appear on the display. Second, seven LEDs next to speed control switch (11) will be illuminated.

  13. Move parking brake switch (2) to the OFF position.

  14. Move propel lever (1) to the FULL FORWARD position. Observe each drum section for movement.

  15. Move propel lever (1) to the FULL REVERSE position. Observe each drum section for movement.

  16. Move propel lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.

  17. Place the engine in ECO mode or in low idle.

  18. Move engine start switch (8) to the OFF position.

  19. If any drum section moved during the brake test, check the main relief pressure in accordance with Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Relief Valve (Main) Test and Adjust" in this publication. If the main relief pressure is within specifications, the brake for that section must be repaired or replaced.

  20. Reconnect the brake supply hose assemblies.

  21. Lower the machine to the ground.
