CB7 and CB8 Asphalt Compactor Propel System Caterpillar

Speed Sensor (Propel Motor) - Test - Solid Drum

Usage:

CB7 AT5

------ WARNING! ------

Diesel engine exhaust contains products of combustion which may cause personal injury.

Always start and operate the engine in a well ventilated area, and, if in an enclosed area, vent the exhaust to the outside.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from rotating and moving parts.

Moving fan blades and moving parts will throw or cut any object or tool that falls or is pushed into them.

Make sure no one is working on, underneath or close to an engine that is running. Make sure the area is free of personnel.

------ WARNING! ------

Injury to personnel can result if they are not in the operator's view. Allow only essential personnel near the machine, and make sure the personnel are in the operator's view when testing, to prevent injury. Make sure checks are done in an open area.

------ WARNING! ------

To prevent injury or death, never work under a machine while a test is being performed.

Note: The propel motor for each drum is equipped with a speed sensor. The following procedure can be used to test any of the sensors.

Note: Both drums have speed sensors on the propel motors.

  7. Locate speed sensor connector (10) for the drum being tested. Do not disconnect the connector.

  8. Insert red spoon from Tool (B) into pin "3" or "4" of the connector. Insert black spoon from Tool (B) into pin "2" of the connector.

  9. Connect Tool (A) to Tool (B). Set Tool (A) to measure frequency.

  10. Move engine start switch (8) to the START position. Release the switch when the engine starts.

  11. Place the engine in high idle.

  12. Operate the hydraulic system until the oil temperature reaches the test temperature of 45 °C (113 °F).

  13. Move parking brake switch (2) to the OFF position.

  14. Place the engine in ECO mode.

  15. Use propel speed range control switch (11) to shift the propel motors into the LOW SPEED position.

Note: Two things indicate when the propel motors are in the LOW SPEED position. First, "Propel Mode Low" will appear on the display. Second, one LED next to propel speed range control switch (11) will be illuminated.

  16. Move propel lever (1) into the forward range.

    Illustration 9g06166788

  17. Determine drum rpm using Tool (C). Adjust drum rotation speed with speed control button (12), to obtain a drum rotation speed of approximately 20 to 30 rpm.

  18. Record frequency with Tool (A).

  19. Multiply drum rpm measured in Step 17 by 5. Compare this value to frequency measured by Tool (A). The values should match within 2 Hz.

  20. Move propel lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.

  21. Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.

  22. Move engine start switch (8) to the OFF position.

  23. If the speed sensor is not functioning properly or shows no signal, replace the speed sensor and retest. Go to Step 10. If the speed sensor is functioning properly, remove the tooling and lower the machine to the ground.

Note: The speed sensors can alternately be tested with the service tool software.

  24. Use a suitable lifting device to lift the machine off the jack stands. The weight of the machine is approximately 8720 kg (19224 lb). Remove the jack stands and lower the machine to the ground.
