Oil Cooler

Usage:

Remove And Install Oil Cooler

1. Drain the coolant from the cooling system.

2. Drain the oil from the oil cooler.

3. Remove clamp (5).

NOTE: Step 4 is for the 3512 and 3516 Engines.

4. Remove elbow (1) and tube (6).

5. Remove fuel filter (3).

6. Remove fuel line (8) and the clamps that hold it to the oil cooler and the block.

7. Disconnect flange (4). Disconnect elbow (9) from the oil cooler.

8. Fasten a hoist to oil cooler (7) and remove the bolts (10).

9. Remove bolts (2) that hold oil cooler (7) to the block. Remove oil cooler (7). The weight of the oil cooler is 50 kg (110 lb) for a 3508, 65 kg (145 lb) for a 3512, and 78 kg (171 lb) for a 3516.

NOTE: For a 3508, replace the gasket between the oil cooler and block. Put clean engine oil on all O-ring seals before assembly.

NOTE: For installation of the oil cooler, reverse the removal steps.

Disassemble Oil Cooler

Start By:

a. remove oil cooler

1, Remove the bolts from elbow (1) and remove elbow (1) and tube (2) as a unit from the oil cooler.

2. Remove tube (2) from elbow (1). Remove the O-ring seals from tube (2) and elbow (1).

3. Put marks on bonnet (3) and core assembly (4) for correct alignment at assembly. Remove bonnet (3) from core assembly (4).

4. Remove the bolts and oil cooler bypass elbow (5). Remove the O-ring seal from the oil cooler bypass elbow.

5. Remove flange (8) and tube (7) as a unit from bonnet (6). Remove the O-ring seals from tube (7).

6. Remove two bolts (9), cover (10), spring (11), bypass valve (12) and O-ring seal (13) from oil cooler bypass elbow (5).

7. Remove the bolts to remove cover (14) and remove the O-ring seal from the oil cooler bypass elbow.


Typical Example

8. Put marks on bonnet (6) and core assembly (4) for correct alignment at assembly. Remove bonnet (6) from core assembly (4).

9. If necessary, remove drain plug (15) and the O-ring seal.

NOTE: Cover (16) is not used in this cooler group.

Assemble Oil Cooler

1. Make sure the tubes in core assembly (4) are clean and free of dirt and foreign material.


Typical Example

2. Install the O-ring seal and drain plug (15), if it was necessary to remove them.

3. Put the gasket and bonnet (6) in position on core assembly (4) and install the bolts.

4. Install the O-ring seal on oil cooler bypass elbow (5) and put clean engine oil on it. Install cover (14) and the bolts.

5. Put bypass valve (12) and spring (11) in position in oil cooler by-pass elbow (5). Install O-ring seal (13) and put clean engine oil on it. Install cover (10) and two bolts (9) on the oil cooler bypass elbow.


Typical Example

6. Install the O-ring seal on the oil cooler bypass elbow and put clean engine oil on it. Put oil cooler bypass elbow (5) on the core assembly and install the bolts.

7. Install the O-ring seals on tube (7) and put clean engine oil on the seals. Install tube (7) and flange (8) as a unit in bonnet (6).

8. Put the gasket and bonnet (3) in position on core assembly (4) and install the bolts.

9. Put the O-ring seals on both ends of tube (2) and put clean engine oil on the seals. Install tube (2) in elbow (1).

10. Install the O-ring seal on elbow (1) and put clean engine oil on it. Put elbow (1) and tube (2) as a unit in position and install the bolts.
