Introduction

The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.

Problem

The VIMS ECM (ABL platform) exhibits failures of hardware with the battery-backed memory. The backup battery will run down and lose the battery-backed memory. This usually results in replacement of the ECM. When the battery used by the 160-4891 Electronic Control Module (VIMS) requires replacement, the following indications are evident:

  • a large number in Service Meter Hour (SMH)

  • a large number in the odometer reading

Solution

A new procedure for the replacement of the battery exists for all 160-4891 Electronic Control Modules (VIMS). For details on replacing the failed battery backup, refer to the following listed references:

  • Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, RENR2631, "Battery - Replace"

  • Systems Operation, Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, RENR6318, "Battery - Replace"

  • Systems Operation, Troubleshooting, Testing and Adjusting, RENR3376, "Battery - Replace"

  • Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, SENR6059, "Battery - Replace"

The documents for reference that are listed above have been updated with a detailed procedure and a list for required tools.
