Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |
Wipe covers and surfaces around openings before checking or adding oil. Park on a level surface.
- Position the wheels so that the final drive drain plugs are facing downward. Remove the final drive drain plugs and allow the oil to drain into a suitable container. Clean the drain plugs and install the drain plugs.

- Remove the differential drain plugs and allow the oil to drain into a suitable container. Clean the drain plugs and install the drain plugs.

- Remove the differential filler plugs. Fill the differentials to the bottom of the filler plug openings.

- Clean the filler plugs and install the filler plugs.
- Position the wheels so that the filler plugs are even with the center line of the wheel. Remove the filler plugs.

- Fill the final drives slowly to the bottom of the filler openings.

- Clean the filler plugs and install the filler plugs
- If the specified amount of oil will not fit in the final drives, install the final drive filler plugs. Operate the machine on level ground for a few minutes in order to equalize the oil level in the axles.
- Remove the filler plugs and add the remaining oil.
- Operate the machine for a few minutes and recheck the oil level. The oil level should reach the bottom of the filler plug opening.
Note: If the oil level is higher than the filler plug opening, do not allow the oil to drain to the level of the filler plug opening. Install the filler plug.
- Remove the front and rear differential breathers.
Note: To access the front differential breather, remove the cover on the front of the machine.

- Wash the breathers in clean, nonflammable solvent.
- Install the clean breathers.
