NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Wipe covers and surfaces around openings before checking or adding oil. Park on a level surface.

Front Differential and Final Drives

  1. Remove magnetic plug (1) and suction screen (3) from manifold (2) .

  1. Inspect the screen and the magnetic plug for large particles of debris. An excessive amount of debris may be an indication of a possible failure. If large particles are found, consult your Caterpillar dealer for further analysis and additional guidance.

  1. Wash the magnetic plug and suction screen (3) in clean, nonflammable solvent. Clean the magnetic plug with a cloth, stiff bristle brush or pressure air. Inspect the seal on the magnetic plug. Replace the seal if it is worn or damaged.

  1. Inspect the screen mesh. Replace the suction screen if the mesh is worn or damaged.

  1. Install the suction screen and the magnetic plug in the manifold. Tighten the magnetic plug.

  1. Remove the front axle oil filter element (if equipped). Discard the used oil filter element. Make sure that all of the old seal is removed from the filter base.

  1. Apply a thin film of clean oil to the seal on the new oil filter element.

  1. Install the new oil filter element by hand. Tighten the oil filter element until the sealing surface contacts the filter base. Tighten the oil filter element by an additional 3/4 of a turn.

Note: There are rotation index marks on the filter, that are spaced 90 degrees (1/4 turn) apart. Use these rotation marks as a guide when tightening the filter.

  1. Remove the front differential filler plug. Fill the front differential to the bottom of the filler plug opening.

Reference: For information on lubricants and refill capacities, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Clean the filler plug and install the filler plug.

  1. Position each front wheel so that the filler plugs for the front final drives are even with the center line of the wheel. Remove the filler plugs.

  1. Fill the front final drives slowly to the bottom of the filler plug openings.

Reference: For information on lubricants and refill capacities, refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" for the machine that is being serviced.

  1. Clean the filler plugs and install the filler plugs.

  1. Start and operate the engine at low idle for a few minutes in order to equalize the oil level in the front differential and final drives.

  1. Recheck the front differential oil level with the engine operating at low idle. The oil level should reach the bottom of the differential filler plug opening. Add oil, if necessary.

Note: If the oil level is higher than the filler plug opening, do not allow the oil to drain to the level of the filler plug opening. Install the filler plug.
