Usage:
Lubricants recommended for use in these engines are identified by the sub-headings that follow. Careful attention to the proper selection will add to the performance, economy and life of your engine.
Crankcase Lubricating Oils
Use oils meeting the following engine service classification:
SC and SD (MS - Motor Severe Oils)
CB (Supplement 1 Oils)
CC (MIL-L-2104B or MIL-L-46152 Specification Oils)
CD or MIL-L-2104C
Automotive Manufacturer's Association MS quality levels oils (Engine Service Classification SD) must be marked "meets or exceeds car makers requirements". These are additive-type oils that meet a rigid, high quality standard and are certified for use in Caterpillar 1100 Series Diesel Truck Engines.
SAE Grades to Use: The grade of oil classified in terms of viscosity and is identified by numbers called SAE numbers. Oils having lower SAE numbers are more fluid and flow more readily than those having higher numbers.
Use 10W/30, 10W/40 or SAE 30 grade oils for starting temperatures above freezing. Use 10W, 10W/30 or 10W/40 grade oils for starting temperatures below freezing. Use 5W/20 at starting temperatures between -10° to -65°F (-23° to -54°C). It may be necessary to warm the oil so the engine can be cranked and oil can circulate freely.
To determine if the oil in the crankcase will flow in cold weather, remove the oil level gauge (dipstick) before starting. If the oil will flow off, the oil is fluid enough to circulate properly.
