Usage:
CHECK CRANKCASE OIL LEVEL before starting and when refueling. Some oil dipsticks are marked on both sides. One side is for checking the level with the engine stopped; the other side is for checking the level when the engine is running.
Use oils which meet Engine Service Classification CD (MIL-L-2104C). These are additive-type oils approved for use in Caterpillar Diesel Engines.
Change engine oil and filter(s) as specified in the Lubrication and Maintenance charts.
CHECK ENGINE COOLANT LEVEL daily (with engine stopped). Carefully release cooling system pressure before checking. Fill to the proper level with permanent-type antifreeze and water. Use water which is free as possible from scale forming minerals, (not softened water).
Before placing the engine in operation, make sure a 3% concentration of Caterpillar Corrosion Inhibitor or equivalent has been added to the cooling system.

Do not use with Dowtherm 209. |
CHECK RADIATOR for dirt and foreign material, fan, water pump and accessory drive belts for cracks, breaks and frayed edges. While checking belts, also check for oil, water or fuel leaks and general appearance of engine compartment.
CHECK FUEL SUPPLY: Drain a cupful of fuel from the bottom of the tank to remove water or sediment.
Fill fuel tanks after completing a run. Partially filled tanks will collect moisture if the truck is parked for any length of time. Use No. 2 fuel oil or No. 2D diesel fuel in Caterpillar 1693 Diesel Truck Engines. Use No. 1D diesel fuel or No. 1D fuel oil in extreme cold temperature. Keep fuel clean. Refer to Fuel Specifications for detailed information on fuel selection.
