3500 VEHICULAR ENGINES Caterpillar

Crankshaft

Usage:

Remove Crankshaft

START BY:

a. remove rocker shaft assemblies and push rods

b. remove front drive housing

c. remove rear gear group (Step 1 only)

d. remove piston cooling jets

NOTICE

The rocker shaft assemblies and push rods do not have to be removed to remove the crankshaft, but bent push rods can be the result if they are not removed.

1. Put the engine in the position as shown. The weight of the 3512 Engine is approximately 6131 kg (12516 lb.). The weight of the 3516 Engine is approximately 7763 kg (17114 lb.).

NOTE: The counterweights does not have to be removed from the crankshaft, if the piston and connecting rod assemblies have been removed from the engine.

2. Put identification marks on counterweights (1) and remove them from the crankshaft.

3. Remove bearing caps (2) from the connecting rod, and push the connecting rods away from the crankshaft. Use wire to hold the upper half of the connecting rods away from the crankshaft.

4. Remove the center main bearing cap, and remove two thrust plates (3) from each side of the main bearing.

5. Use two of the bolts that hold the flywheel to the crankshaft, and install a bolt in each end of the crankshaft. Fasten a hoist to the crankshaft as shown.

6. Remove the remainder of main bearing caps (5) and remove crankshaft (4) from the cylinder block. The weight of the crankshaft in 3512 Engines is 545 kg (1202 lb.). The weight of the crankshaft used in 3516 Engines is 726 kg (1601 lb.).

7. If necessary, remove bolts (7) to remove gears (6) from each end of the crankshaft.

Install Crankshaft

NOTE: If main bearing clearances or crankshaft endplay is to be checked, see Install Crankshaft Main Bearings.

1. Install gears (1) on each end of the crankshaft.

2. Make sure the upper halves of main bearings (2) (bearings with oil holes) are in position in the cylinder block. Put clean engine oil on the bearings.

3. Fasten a hoist to crankshaft (3) with two flywheel bolts, and put it in position. Make sure the word "FRONT" on the end of the crankshaft is toward the front of the cylinder block.

4. Make sure the lower halves of the main bearings are in position in the main bearing caps. Put clean engine oil on the bearings, and install all but the center main bearing cap on the cylinder block. The caps must be installed with the word "FRONT" and the cast part number toward the front of the cylinder block. Each cap has a number on the bottom surface and must be installed in the same position as the correct number on the right side of the block pan rail.

5. Put Fel-Pro C100 Lubricant on the main bearing cap bolts. Tighten the bolts in the number sequence as shown to a torque of 136 ± 14 N·m (100 ± 10 lb.ft.); then tighten each bolt again in the number sequence 180° ± 5° of a turn more.

6. Put clean engine oil on the thrust plates. Install thrust plates (8) on each side of the center main bearing. Install the center main bearing cap and the bolts to hold it. Use the same procedure in Step 5 to tighten the bolts.

7. Remove the wire that holds the upper half of the connecting rods in position. Make sure the upper and lower halves of the bearings are in position on the connecting rods and the rod caps. Put clean engine oil on the bearings.

8. Put the connecting rods in position on the crankshaft. Install caps (9) in the same location as they were removed from with the number on the side of the cap next to the number on the side of the connecting rod. Put Fel-Pro C100 Lubricant on the bolt threads and contact surfaces of the bolts and caps. Tighten the bolts in number sequence as follows:

NOTE: Bolts (12) and (13) are on the end of the rod cap opposite the end that has the locating pin.

a. Hand tighten bolts No. 10 and 11 to a torque of 90 ± 5 N·m (66 ± 4 lb.ft.).

b. Hand tighten bolts No. 12 and 13 to a torque of 90 ± 5 N·m (66 ± 4 lb.ft.).

c. Hand tighten bolts No. 10 and 11 again to a torque of 90 ± 5 N·m (66 ± 4 lb.ft.).

d. Hand tighten bolts No. 12 and 13 again to a torque of 90 ± 5 N·m (66 ± 4 lb.ft.).

e. Tighten each bolt an additional 90 ± 5° of a turn. If desired an impact wrench can be used.

NOTE: See Install Connecting Rod Bearings for the correct bearing clearance check.

NOTICE

Each counterweight has a number and must be installed in the same position as the correct number on the crankshaft mounting pad to prevent damage to the crankshaft when the engine is run.

9. Make sure the dowels are in position, and install counterweight (14) on the crankshaft.

10. Put Fel-Pro C100 Lubricant on the counterweight bolt threads and bolt contact surfaces. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 50 ± 5 N·m (37 ± 4 lb.ft.). Tighten the bolts an additional 120° ± 5°.

11. Put engine in a vertical position.

END BY:

a. install rocker shaft assemblies and push rods

b. install front drive housing

c. install rear gear group

d. install piston cooling jets
