September 2008 NEW
PRODUCT AND UPDATES FOR REMAN 3500 ENGINE PRODUCT
Note: Please Ensure That This Information Is Shared With Your
Dealer Service Department Management.
Announcement The Caterpillar Remanufacturing
Division is pleased to announce several new products to support 3500
series engines. The following releases provide Cat dealers with a lower
cost, reliable repair option to use when rebuilding 3500 engines.
Reman 3500 UTN Bare Blocks for 3500B Engines
Caterpillar Remanufactured Products is releasing Upgrade-to-New Bare
Blocks for 3508, 3512, and 3516 engines. This option allows a customer
to purchase the same blocks that have been available as a new part
number under a Reman part number and receive a core credit for a lower
overall cost. To realize the savings, the customer will have to return
the core to recover their core deposit. Reman Block (UTN) part numbers
are listed below.
The purpose of this program is to enable Caterpillar to recover as many
engine block cores as possible. The UTN program is therefore an
incentive for customers to return cores to Caterpillar.
Using state-of-the-art salvage capabilities, many of these cores can be
remanufactured and used in Reman product. The core criteria for the
Reman UTN bare blocks will allow the majority of blocks, even damaged
blocks, to be returned as acceptable core allowing customers to take
advantage of the Reman UTN price. Refer to SELD0304 for core acceptance
criteria for 3500 Bare Blocks. Stainless Steel
Water Ferrule Inserts (large, small) Released as Serviced Part
A typical repair
process employed during an engine block rebuild is to insert stainless
steel plugs where pitting has occurred in the water ferrule area.
Stainless steel inserts used by Cat Reman to salvage 3500 engine blocks
are now being released as a serviced part number. The inserts have the
water ferrule passage pre-drilled. Reman is releasing these pre-drilled
inserts to enable dealers to standardize their salvage processes and to
decrease the time required for this salvage procedure. The water ferrule
insert salvage procedure is documented in SEBF8263.
Cat Reman installs these stainless steel inserts as standard practice on
all salvaged 3500 engine block water ferrules. New engine blocks which
are sometimes used in Reman products will not have these inserts.
Inserts will be sold in packages of 50. 3500 HD
Cylinder Head Changes
To improve the
reliability and durability of the 3500 engines, Caterpillar and Cat
Reman have released different cylinder head part numbers for use on 3500
HD engines. These new releases incorporate new springs and rotocoils
shown to provide longer life.
Other changes effecting 3500 cylinder heads include:
? Reman UTN now 100% new parts - Historically Reman UTN heads have only
guaranteed that the cylinder head casting itself was new. This provided
the customer an opportunity to probably get two lives out of the head by
milling it down at the first rebuild. Now the UTN heads include all new
parts but can still be purchased at a discount to new when the customer
has a useable core to return to Caterpillar. Refer to SELD0287 or
SELD0018 for the core acceptance criteria for cylinder heads.
? Discontinuance of Reman valves ? Due to low customer acceptance,
effective July 2008, Reman has discontinued the use of Reman valves in
3500 HD applications. Features and Benefits
