1674 DIESEL TRUCK ENGINE Caterpillar

Starting The Engine

Usage:

1. Place the transmission in NEUTRAL (and disengage flywheel clutch, if so equipped).
2. Push accelerator pedal to half engine speed position. (Before normal oil pressure is reached, the governor control linkage travel limits engine speed. Do not attempt to force it past the stop.) See page 60.
3. Turn key switch to ON.
4. Turn heat-start switch to HEAT or START, as indicated by the chart.

EACH GLOW PLUG DRAWS APPROXIMATELY 10 AMPERES WHILE HEATING. THIS IS A SMALL AMOUNT IN COMPARISON TO THE ELECTRIC STARTER LOAD.

5. After indicated heat time, move switch to the START position, and if starting fluid is necessary, discharge starting fluid or spray starting fluid into air cleaner inlet. (If engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch and wait 60 seconds to allow the starter motor to cool before using it again.)

DO NOT MOVE THE SWITCH TO THE HEAT POSITION WHILE THE ENGINE IS WARM AND RUNNING.

After Starting The Engine

6. As soon as engine starts, reduce engine speed to low idle. In extreme cold it may be desired to move switch to HEAT position until the engine runs smoothly, then release the switch. If engine fails to start, see Troubleshooting Guide on page 73.
7. Do not apply load to the engine or increase engine speed until oil pressure registers on gauge. (Oil pressure should rise to normal within 60 seconds after engine starts.)
8. Operate the engine at low load until all systems reach operating temperatures. Check all gauges during warmup period.
