Introduction
This document is intended to be used as reference to aid in the commissioning of a generator set with the 1G1U feature. It is not intended to be a complete system checklist. Use the Genset Commissioning Checklist for the complete package as well as this checklist. Refer to local requirements and installation for complete system requirements. Only qualified personnel shall perform this work. Use proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) when working at the installation. Verify that measuring equipment is within calibration and in proper operating order for the job required.
This checklist assumes that the control panel already has the required wiring and terminals installed either from the factory, or otherwise. Refer to LEXE1426, "EMCP 4.4 1G1U (Single Generator, Single Utility) Commissioning Guide" for more information at Cat® Electronic Media Center.

Before servicing/performing maintenance on the machine, electrical power must be physically disconnected; battery plugs must be disconnected from the batteries, or the trailing cable must be unplugged, and warning tags and padlocks shall be applied by a certified electrician. Certified electricians shall perform or direct any electrical work, including any energized testing, repair work in controllers, motors, or other approved compartments, and shall insure that all compartments are properly closed and inspected prior to re-energization. All applicable lock out and tag out procedures must be followed. |

Checklist
Wiring | |||
---|---|---|---|
1. Generator Set Wiring | |||
A. Bus Sensing | Yes | No | N/A |
1. The voltage of the utility as seen by the EMCP is <= 600V L-L, or else a potential transformer is installed between the utility and the EMCP utility voltage sensing inputs | |||
2. If the EMCP utility voltage sensing wires come from the same potential transformer that feed the transducer, the burden of the PTs is not exceeded | |||
3. If the EMCP utility voltage sensing wires come from a potential transformer, that potential transformer is not adding an unintended phase shift | |||
4. Generator bus sensing is moved from the output of the generator set circuit breaker to the utility side of the utility breaker (from the control panel bus sensing fuses to utility voltage sensing) | |||
B. Utility Breaker Requirements | Yes | No | N/A |
1. The utility breaker is able to close within 5 to 6 cycles, has the abilitytoelectrically open and close, and has Aux contacts (a and b) | |||
2. The utility breaker has both a powered shunt (DC) and/or undervoltage trip | |||
C. Utility Breaker Control | Yes | No | N/A |
1. The utility breaker Aux contacts are wired between the EMCP Digital Inputs and the utility breaker | |||
2. The utility UV trip, shunt close, and shunt trip signals are wired between the EMCP relays and the utility breaker | |||
3. The utility CB Bell Alarm and Utility Relay signals are wired between the EMCP Digital Inputs and the utility breaker | |||
4. The utility circuit breaker Close and Trip command outputs from the EMCP are wired to relays that can handle the current draw from the utility circuit breaker trip unit | |||
D. Other | Yes | No | N/A |
1. Utility Breaker Request (optional) – A control switch is wired between the EMCP Digital Inputs and the utility breaker | |||
2. If connecting to a live system, the utility shunt trip is connected as the last step of the commissioning | |||

Wiring | |||
---|---|---|---|
2. Tranducer Wiring | |||
Note: This section is intended for the Caterpillar supplied transducer, but may be useful for others. | |||
A. Transducer Selection | Yes | No | N/A |
1. The transducer calculates both kW and kVar | |||
2. The transducer sends out both positive and negative values without requiring an additional signal | |||
3. The output ranges are within the EMCP Analog Input ranges | |||
B. Utility Side - Voltage Sensing | Yes | No | N/A |
1. The transducer voltage input is within the transducer limit (for the Caterpillar supplied transducer, <=480V L-L, nominal), or else a potential transformer is installed | |||
2. If the transducer voltage sensing wires come from the same potential transformer that feed the EMCP utility voltage sensing, the burden of the PTs is not exceeded | |||
3. Appropriately sized wires are connected between the utility voltage sensing points (or from utility PTs) and the appropriate inputs of the transducer | |||
4. Voltage sensing comes from the utility side of the utility breaker | |||
C. Utility Side - Current Sensing | Yes | No | N/A |
1. The utility sensing current transformers are sized appropriately to prevent saturation at full power and actual pf | |||
2. Appropriately sized wires are connected between the utility current transformers and the appropriate inputs of the transducer | |||
3. The secondary rating of the current transformers on the utility side of the utility breaker fall within the rating of the inputs on the transducer | |||
D. Generator Set Side | Yes | No | N/A |
