Service Tool Requirement

A Caterpillar® Electronic Technician (ET) service tool 2018B or later will be required.

Changes Implemented in the Engine Software

  1. Electronic unit injector diagnostic robustness improvements.

The issue is that the existing software could cause the Electronic Control Module (ECM) to generate one or more electronic unit injector solenoid current above normal fault codes. The codes generated may be J1939 Codes 651-6, 652-6, 653-6, and 654-6. Also, CDL Codes 1-6, 2-6, 3-6, and 4-6. The fault codes can lead to an engine de-rate, in addition to difficulties to start the engine.

The resolution is the improvements to the electronic unit injector diagnostic robustness.

  2. EGR sensor code robustness improvements.

The issue is the EGR differential pressure signal may have a problem in range if the 5V supply to the sensor is lost. If the 5V supply to the sensor is lost, this condition causes the signal to ‘flat-line’ in the range of approximately 3.3V. This fault can lead to false detection under some operating conditions when the pressure pulsation becomes small. The fault codes displayed may be J1939 Code 411-2, and CDL Code 3387-2.

The resolution is the improvements to the EGR differential pressure diagnostic. The improvements to the EGR differential pressure diagnostic add more robustness to the trigger condition. Also, there is an implementation of a voltage standard deviation check.

  3. Diagnostic and robustness improvements to low DEF level events.

The issue is that in certain instances, the reported DEF level on key-on was incorrect. In other circumstances where the DEF was frozen, an incorrect DEF level was indicated after key-on and before system prime. This incorrect DEF level indication could result in a Level 3 inducement. In a few cases this inducement could not be cleared until the DEF had been fully thawed.

The resolution is the improvements to the key-on and DEF thaw diagnostic.

  4. Robustness improvements to J1939 Network #3 Abnormal Update Rate.

The issue is that the existing software could see J1939 Network #3 Abnormal Update Rate fault code 1235-9 (5856-9)occurring that would self-heal in a short time frame.

The resolution is the improvements to the diagnostic of the fault delay time.

  5. Robustness improvements to low intake manifold pressure diagnostic.

The issue is that existing software could incorrectly trigger low intake manifold diagnostic code at high altitude and raised ambient temperatures.

The resolution is improvement to the diagnostic to reduce incorrectly triggered low intake manifold engine derates.
