There have been isolated instances of issues with oil passing the valve stem seal. The cause of the oil passing the valve stem seal is from incorrect installation of the valve stem seal. The incorrect installation will cause the valve stem seal to deform.

During engine operation, oil around the exhaust manifold gasket could be a sign of incorrect installation of the valve stem seals. Another sign could be the duty cycle of the engine. Should oil be observed then the following action should be taken:

  • Start engine and allow to warm up normal working temperature

  • Operate the engine gradually building the load until full load is applied over 1 hour

If oil is still visible around the exhaust manifold gasket, then check the installation of the valve stem seals. Refer to "Disassembly and Assembly", Inlet and Exhaust Valve Springs - Remove and Install for removal of the valve springs with the cylinder head in installed.

Typical example
(A) 13.8 mm to 12.9 mm (0.543 inch to 0.508 inch)

Measure the height (A) of the valve stem seals. If any of the valve stem seals measurements are incorrect, then replace the valve stem seals. Refer to "Disassembly and Assembly", Inlet and Exhaust Valves - Remove and Install to allow removal and installation of the valve stem seals.

If any of the valve stem seals measurements are correct, install valve springs, refer to "Disassembly and Assembly", Inlet and Exhaust Valve Springs - Remove and Install.
