If the engine is shut down due to a high turbocharger turbine inlet temperature, the power to the engine Electronic Control Module (ECM) must be cycled in order to restart the engine.

Probable Causes

  • Codes

  • Intake manifold temperature

  • Valve lash

  • Exhaust temperature

  • Inlet air system

  • Exhaust system

  • Aftercooler (if equipped)

  • Fuel injectors

  • Turbocharger

Recommended Actions

Table 2
Troubleshooting Test Steps  Values  Results

1. Check for Codes

A. Connect Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) to the service tool connector.

B. Look for active codes that are associated with the system for the event code.

Codes

Result: An associated code is active.

Repair: Troubleshoot any associated codes before continuing with this test.

Result: A code is active or logged.

Proceed to Test Step 2.

2. Check for High Intake Manifold Temperature

Note: A one degree increase in the intake manifold temperature will increase the exhaust temperature by approximately three degrees.

A. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Intake Manifold Air Temperature Is High" for additional information.

Temperature

Result: The intake manifold temperature is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 3.

Result: The intake manifold temperature is NOT OK.

Repair: Determine the cause of the high inlet air temperature. Repair or replace damaged components.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.

3. Check the Valve Lash

Note: The valve lash can affect the performance of the engine.

Valve Lash

Result: The valve lash is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 4.

Result: The valve lash is NOT OK.

Repair: Reset the valve lash. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Valve Lash - Adjust" for additional information.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.

4. Check for High Exhaust Temperature

Temperature

Result: The exhaust temperature is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 5.

Result: The exhaust temperature is NOT OK.

Repair: Determine the cause of the high exhaust temperature. Repair or replace damaged exhaust components.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 5.

5. Inspect the Inlet Air System

A. Check the air filter restriction indicator, if equipped. Refer to the Operation and Maintenance Manual for additional information.

B. Measure the inlet air restriction for each turbocharger. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Inlet Air Is Restricted" for additional information.

C. Check the following inlet air system components for leaks:

- Hoses
- Tubes
- Bellows
- Clamps

Inlet Air System

Result: The inlet air system is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 6.

Result: The inlet air system is NOT OK. An imbalance in the system is discovered.

Repair: Repair or replace damaged inlet air system components. Equalize the inlet air restriction for each of the turbochargers.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 6.

6. Inspect the Exhaust System

A. Turn the keyswitch to the "OFF" position.

B. Inspect the following exhaust components:

- Lines
- Hoses
- Bellows
- Clamps
- Exhaust manifolds

Note: Verify that all of the bellows have the correct orientation. Ensure that the arrow on the bellows is pointing in the direction of the exhaust flow.

Exhaust System

Result: The exhaust system is OK.

Proceed to Test Step 7.

Result: The exhaust system is NOT OK.

Repair: Repair or replace damaged exhaust components.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 7.

7. Inspect the Separate Circuit Aftercooler (SCAC)

A. Check the SCAC for dirt, debris, and/or damage.

B. Check the SCAC for restrictions and internal blockage.

C. Check the SCAC lines for leaks and/or damage.

Aftercooler

Result: The aftercooler and lines are OK.

Proceed to Test Step 8.

Result: The aftercooler and lines are NOT OK.

Repair: Clean or replace damaged aftercooler or lines.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 8.

8. Test the Fuel Injectors

Note: Faulty injectors that deliver too much fuel will increase exhaust temperatures.

A. Connect Cat ET.

B. Use Cat ET to perform the following fuel injector tests:

- "Injector Solenoid Test"
- "Cylinder Cutout Test"

Refer to Troubleshooting, "Cat ET Service Features" for additional information.

Fuel Injectors

Result: The injectors are OK.

Proceed to Test Step 9.

Result: The injectors are NOT OK.

Repair: Repair or replace the faulty injectors.

If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 9.

9. Inspect the Turbochargers for Damage

A. Turn the keyswitch to the "OFF" position.

B. Inspect the following turbocharger components for damage:

- Compressor wheel
- Compressor housing
- Turbine wheel
- Turbine housing

Turbochargers

Result: There is a problem with the turbochargers.

Repair: Repair or replace damaged turbocharger.

Verify that the repair eliminated the problem.

If the procedure did not correct the issue, contact your Cat dealer Technical Communicator (TC). For further assistance, your TC can confer with the Dealer Solutions Network (DSN).
