Description Of Change: A new valve lifter has been introduced. The new valve lifter is an improved design.

Adaptable To: New 464-6253 Valve Lifter replaces 138-2053 Valve Lifter.

    Illustration 2g03887096
Erosion of the lobs on the camshaft assembly

  1. The existing valve lifter 138-2053 Valve Lifter (1) has shown signs of erosion on engines in the advanced stage of engine life. Refer to Illustration 1.

  2. Excess wear results in the inability to adjust the engine valve lash. Check the engine valve lash. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, "Engine Valve Lash - Inspect/Adjust" for the correct procedure. If possible, adjust the valve lash to the correct clearance. If the correct clearance cannot be obtained, proceed to step 3.

  3. Erosion of camshaft (2) will result from the erosion of the valve lifter. Refer to Illustration 2. If erosion is confirmed on the valve lifters and camshaft, then proceed to step 4.

  4. If erosion is present and the correct clearance cannot be obtained for the engine valve lash, remove the camshaft. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Camshaft - Remove and Install" and Disassembly and Assembly, "Lifter Group - Remove and Install" for the correct procedures.
