C13 and C15 Engines for Combat and Tactical Vehicles Caterpillar

System Configuration Parameters

Usage:

C13 EMS
System configuration parameters affect the emissions of the engine or the power of the engine. The parameters are stored in the Engine Control Module (ECM). Use the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) to view the values of the parameters and change the values of the parameters. The following information describes the parameters:

Full Load Setting

The "Full Load Setting" (FLS) represents an adjustment to the fuel system that was made at the factory in order to fine-tune the fuel system. The correct value for this parameter is stamped on the engine information plate.

A new ECM requires this parameter to be programmed. "FLS" will be displayed beneath the 253-02 diagnostic code until the FLS is programmed. Factory passwords are not required in order to program the FLS into a new ECM.

Factory passwords are required to change the FLS after an FLS has been programmed.

Full Torque Setting

"Full Torque Setting" (FTS) is similar to "Full Load Setting".

A new ECM requires this parameter to be programmed. "FTS" will be displayed beneath the 253-02 diagnostic code until the FTS is programmed. Factory passwords are not required in order to program the FTS into a new ECM.

Factory passwords are required to change the FTS after an FTS has been programmed.

"Vehicle Voltage Selection"

The "Vehicle Voltage Selection" parameter determines the upper limit and the lower limit for battery voltage, that is used in order to trip the diagnostic codes for battery power. The options for programming are 12 volt or 24 volt.

Typically, the parameter is set at the Caterpillar manufacturer, based on the engine order. Installing a new ECM will require the "Vehicle Voltage Selection" parameter to be programmed for the appropriate system voltage. "Vehicle Voltage Selection" will be displayed beneath the 253-02 diagnostic code, until the "Vehicle Voltage Selection" is programmed.

Personality Module Code

Every flash file contains a personality module code. The personality module code indicates the horsepower family and the emission certification of the flash file.

When a flash file is loaded into a new ECM, the ECM stores the personality module code into memory. When a different flash file is loaded into an ECM, the ECM compares the new personality module code with the personality module code that is stored in memory. The ECM causes the following conditions to occur if the personality module codes do not match:

  • The engine speed is limited to low idle.

  • A 253-02 diagnostic code is activated. "Personality Module Code" is displayed beneath the code.

Perform one of the following actions in order to correct the condition:

  • Obtain factory passwords. Factory passwords will allow you to change the personality module code.

  • Load the correct flash file into the ECM.

Top Engine Limit (TEL) RPM

The Top Engine Limit (TEL) rpm is not programmable in engines equipped with ADEM 4 ECMs. The TEL is a fixed value, and may vary depending on engine rating.
