Early Hour Clutch Plate And Piston Tang Wear Is Normal Caterpillar

Early Hour Clutch Plate And Piston Tang Wear Is Normal

Usage:

TRACK-TYPE TRACTORSD11R (9TR) TRACK-TYPE TRACTORS

Problem:

Some reports have been received of the FORWARD clutch plate and piston tangs being worn away or "beat in" at low hours (about 2,000 hours). In may cases this is beyond the limits set in the reusability guide.

Solution:

This early hour wear is normal. The plates wear until the area contacting the reaction pin has increased enough to carry the load. Then the wear slows. Early production units have demonstrated that they are capable of lasting the expected hours to rebuild (10,000 to 12,000 total) with this early hour wear.

If new plates are used in a transmission rebuild, then the new plates will also quickly wear to the balance point. This wear generates debris which can contaminate the oil system. When examining a transmission with less than 5,000 hours, use a measurement of 12.5 mm (.49 in) as the maximum Radial Indent Width (B) in place of the 9.7 mm (.38 in) currently in the reusability guide to determine if new plates and pistons are required. (See Illustration)

Work is ongoing to develop a fix to eliminate the initial wear and the related initial debris. Until it is available, reusing the plates as is will reduce the amount of debris introduced into the oil system.
