New Spacer And Plate Used In Transmission Lower Shaft Groups{3307}

Usage:

7251 And 7261 Marine Transmission

SUPPLEMENT: 06/22/81

SERVICE MAGAZINE, APRIL 6, 1981, PAGE 2. In the article "New Spacer And Plate Used In Transmission Lower Shaft Groups," the torque of 1351 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 10 lb ft) is wrong. The correct torque is 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 10 lb ft).

--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------

Description of Change: A new spacer is used between the ahead gear and bearing assembly on the lower shaft. The new spacer is longer and has a larger inside chamfer. This will permit the lower ahead gear to be pulled tight on the tapered shaft during assembly. Formerly, it was possible for the spacer to become tight on the shaft before the gear was tight. The result was damage to the gear.

A new hardened plate is also used on the end of the lower shaft. The new plate is hardened so it will not be damaged when the bolts are tightened.

Adaptable As: The new spacer and plate are direct replacements for the former spacer and plate as shown in the chart.

INSTALLATION: Put the new spacer and heated bearing assembly in position on the lower shaft. Install the new plate and bolts. Tighten the bolts to a torque of 135 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 10 lb ft). Let the assembly cool for 4 hours. Tighten the bolts again to a torque of 1351 ± 15 N·m (100 ± 10 lb ft).
