PROBLEM
Show/hide table
An improperly machined transition radius may exist between the cylinder rod and the rod eye for the 167-7996 Tilt Cylinders on certain 992G Wheel Loaders and the 193-4075, 193-4076 Lift Cylinders on certain 994F Wheel Loaders. This improper or "Stepped" transition could create a stress riser that could significantly shorten the expected life of these rods, and may result in premature failure as the rod could suddenly break at the transition. |

Inspect the rod to eye transition on the cylinders. Image 1 shows the location of the transition radius. Image 2 indicates the correct specifications for this radius. Image 3 shows a defective or "Stepped" radius. Image 4 shows a properly machined radius. If it is determined that the rod assembly does have a defective radius it will be required to remove the affected cylinder and disassemble it at the Dealers Hydraulic Shop. It is recommended that the dealer have a correct exchange cylinder available prior to removing any defective cylinders in order to reduce valuable customer "Down-Time" and loss of machine production. Prior to reworking the Rod to Eye Transition, we are requesting that the Dealer perform a non-destructive Magna-Flux examination of the "Stepped" transition area in order to determine whether or not cracking has initiated in this area and that the Rod Assemblies are indeed re-workable. If the Rod Assemblies are re-workable the Dealer should adhere to the following re-work procedures. FINAL INSPECTION As a final inspection we are requesting an additional Magna-Flux inspection to assure no hidden stress cracks are present. IMPORTANT NOTICE The discrepancy only applies to certain Tilt Cylinder on 992G Wheel Loaders and the Lift Cylinders on 994F Wheel Loaders. All cylinders for these machines have been evaluated and even though this "Stepped" transition may exist on other cylinders, the reliability has not been compromised. |
