9S-9082 | Engine Turning Tool | 1 |
5P-7306 | Shaft Housing | 1 |
5P-7305 | Gear Timing Bolt | 1 |
The starting point for all timing procedures is with the No. 1 piston at the top center position on the compression stroke.
- Remove the starting motor.
- Remove the valve cover.

(2) 5P-7305 Gear Timing Bolt
(3) Timing bolt - Remove the plug from the timing hole in the flywheel housing. Install Tools (1) and (2).
- Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise until timing bolt (3) can be installed into the flywheel through the timing hole in the flywheel housing. The No. 1 piston is now at the top center position.
Note: If the flywheel is turned beyond the point of timing bolt installation, the flywheel must be turned clockwise. Turn the flywheel clockwise by approximately 30 degrees. Then turn the flywheel counterclockwise until the timing bolt can be inserted into the threaded hole. This procedure will remove the play from the gears.
Show/hide tableIllustration 2 g00674776 (4) Rocker arms. - If No. 1 piston is on the compression stroke, the inlet valve and the exhaust valve for the No. 1 piston are closed.
There will be some free play between the rocker arms and the valves. You should be able to move rocker arms (4) up and down with your hand.
If No. 1 piston does not appear to be on the compression stroke, follow these steps:
- Remove the timing bolt.
- Rotate the crankshaft counterclockwise by 360 degrees.
- Install the timing bolt.
The No. 1 piston is now at the top center position on the compression stroke.
