Introduction
The primary method for flashing the Color Multi-Purpose Display (CMPD) is done by using both of the following.
- Cat® Electronic Technician (Cat ET) Service Tool
- A communications Adapter 2 or 3 over J1939 datalink
Cat ET supports a new method of flashing for CMPD electronic control modules.
The new method of flashing enables transfer of the flash file over a universal serial bus (USB) connection via Microsoft® ActiveSync. Either of the following can be used to flash the CMPD:
- Windows XP
- Windows Mobile Device Center using Windows 7 or Windows 8
To use the latest flash feature, Microsoft® ActiveSync must be installed on the PC using Windows XP. Windows Mobile Device Center is typically packaged with Windows 7 and Windows 8.
Full connection support is only provided with 64 bit personal computers running Windows Mobile Device Center. The most recent Windows "CE" drivers are required when using Windows Mobile Device Center. If you are unsure how to verify, contact your IT services.
Note: Flashing the CMPD using the 371-3480 Cable (DISPLAY, USB) may not always be compatible with your computer configuration. If flashing the CMPD using the 371-3480 Cable (DISPLAY, USB) is not compatible, revert to using J1939 datalink. If the problem is not resolved, refer to Special Instruction, REHS5594, "Troubleshooting" section.
Note: The 371-3480 Cable (DISPLAY, USB) is a "Male-A" to "Male-A" USB 2 cable. If a locally sourced alternative is found, ensure that the alternative cable is also a USB 2 cable.
Important Safety Information
Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read this Special Instruction and you understand this information. Use only proper tools and observe all precautions that pertain to the use of those tools. Failure to follow these procedures can result in personal injury. The following procedures should also be observed.
Work safely. Most accidents that involve product operation, maintenance, and repair are caused by failure to observe basic safety rules or precautions. An accident can often be avoided by recognizing potentially hazardous situations before an accident occurs.
A person must be alertto potential hazards. This person should also have the necessary training, skills, and tools to perform these functions properly.
Safety precautions and warnings are provided in this instruction and on the product. If these hazard warnings are not heeded, bodily injury or death could occur to you or to other persons. Caterpillar cannot anticipate every possible circumstance that might involve a potential hazard.
Therefore, the warnings in this publication and the warnings that are on the productare not all inclusive. Ensure that any tool, procedure, work method, or operating technique you use that is not recommended by Caterpillar is safe.
Ensure that the productwill not be damaged or the productwill not be made unsafe by the operation, lubrication, maintenance, or repair procedures used.
Downloading and Installing Microsoft® ActiveSync Using Windows XP
Microsoft® ActiveSync must be downloaded and installed separately. Microsoft® ActiveSync can be downloaded from the Microsoft website using the following link:
http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=199836Illustration 1 | g02504921 |
Follow the installation instructions and the Microsoft® ActiveSync Readme.doc documentation. Once Microsoft® ActiveSync is installed, you will see an icon (1) in the system tray, as shown in Illustration 1.

Microsoft® ActiveSync will run as a background process, monitoring the PC for any device that is compatible. Ensure that Microsoft® ActiveSync does not interfere with any other applications running on the PC. To ensure that ActiveSync does not interfere, rightclickon the Microsoft® ActiveSync icon (1) shown in Illustration 1. Select "Connection Settings". The settings must be shown as above in Illustration 2.
Connecting to the CMPD Device on a Machine
- After Microsoft® ActiveSync is installed, connect the CMPD device to the machine using the standard Comm Adapter II (CA2) or Comm Adapter III (CA3).

If Winflash launches the "Advanced Flash Tool", but Microsoft® ActiveSync is not installed, a warning will appear as pictured in Illustration 13. The corrective action is to download and install Microsoft® ActiveSync to the PC using the link that is provided.
If the CMPD is not detected by Microsoft® ActiveSync, try the following troubleshooting tips:
- Check the USB connections and cycle the keyswitch for the machine.
- Try using a different USB port on the PC.
- Shut down the PC. Then, connect the USB cable. Key on the machine. Power on the PC.
Note: Computer Applications such as firewalls or Windows Settings may prevent successful connection with the CMPD.
Additional troubleshooting steps on ActiveSync can be found on the Microsoft website:
