Introduction
The problem that is identified below does not have a known permanent solution. Until a permanent solution is known, use the solution that is identified below.
Problem
The C175 machine engine software announced under Service Magazine, SEPD2039 has been found to be missing functionality. Reference Service Magazine, SEPD2039 for the full list of intended functionality contained within these software releases.
The functionality error lies within the derate for -7 injector codes. The derate for multiple level 2 -7 injector codes is not functioning. If multiple level 2 -7 codes are present on one bank of the engine, the engine will not derate as intended. The derate for -7 codes was added to provide protection against cylinders going cold. If an injector is run long enough with a -7 code, the injector becomes at risk for dropping out and not firing. If multiple injectors on one bank fall into this scenario, that bank of the engine becomes at risk for driving higher than normal exhaust temperatures into the engine components.
All other functionality within the software as announced in Service Magazine, SEPD2039 is functioning as intended. This includes the level 1 functionality for -7 codes. Usually, a level 1 injector -7 code will be logged 400 hours to 500 hours ahead of a level 2 code, giving ample time to change injectors that are nearing end of life.
Solution
Caterpillar recommends the following action with -7 injector codes:
- Level 1 -7 code: Change the injectors at the next scheduled Preventive Maintenance (PM)
- Level 2 -7 code: Change the injectors at the end of the shift
Currently Caterpillar recommends continuing installations of the engine software. The additional functionality and improvements in the software outweigh the risks or concerns of the -7 code derate error. Also, this software is required to support the improved fuel injectors announced under Service Magazine, SEPD2052. A detailed plan and timeline are being developed to reinstitute the -7 code derate into the software.
