CW16 Pneumatic Compactor Machine Electronic Control System Caterpillar

ECM Software - Install

Usage:

CW-16 N6J
Software flash files are required when replacing the controller (ECM) or updating the controller software.

Note: A “Recovery” Procedure may be necessary if the connection was lost during a flash procedure. See “Recover a Controller (ECM)” at the end of this procedure.

Machine Controller Flash Files

The "Plus+1 Service Tool For Caterpillar" must be used to flash the controller (ECM) being serviced.

Reference the Service Tool Communication Settings and Connections for additional information if needed.

Verify Plus+1 Service Tool for Cat (P1STC) is communicating with the machine. The connection status must be "Connected" or "Logging" (1). Follow the on-screen instructions under Step 1 (See Illustration 5) if the status is "Disconnected".

P1STC requires a machine-specific "P1D" diagnostic file to service any machine. The machine model and serial number prefix are used to look up the diagnostic file. Select the "P1D Help" icon. Use the cross reference document and make a note of the specific diagnostic "P1D" file name.

Manually select Your machine-specific diagnostic file by selecting the "Open Folder" icon. Then open the Cat Diagnostic Files folder to select and open the diagnostic file.

(4) "ECM Service" Selection

When flashing any of the machine system ECMs, the recommendation is to select the "ECM Service" (4) option. The following pages provide step by step procedures for flashing an ECM with the "ECM Service" option.

The "Quick Flash" procedure can be used for the Display, and Compaction ECMs. Configuration settings will need to be selected after flashing the Display. Calibration of the angle sensor will need to be performed after flashing the Compaction ECM.

The "Quick Flash" procedure will NOT save the machine parameters or calibrations. If flashing the "Main Machine Control" ECM, a "Propel Currents Calibration" procedure must be performed if parameters are not saved. Refer to Systems Operation, Testing and Adjusting, UENR2051, "Propel Current Minimum - Calibrate".

Follow steps 6 to 8 for Quick Flash instructions after selecting "Quick Flash" and the "Flash ECM" button.

  2. From the pop-up window, navigate to the "C:\Plus+1" folder. Create a New Folder (7) and name it "Parameters". Leave the file type as "Parameters Data File (*.xml)" (8).

Alternately the parameter file can be saved to any location you prefer.

  3. Name the file "[model name] Parameters" or "[serial number] Parameters". The file name example shown is "CS56B Parameters".

Note: The parameter files are machine serial number specific. Do Not use this parameter file on other machines.

  4. Click the "Save" button (9) to save the parameters to your computer.

The Main Machine ECM, Display, or Machine Compaction ECM can now be replaced or flashed with new software. If replacing an ECM, refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) - Replace", then continue to the next step.

  6. From the pop-up window, navigate to the flash file location and open the flash file. Flash files will have an ".LHX" extension type.

If a pop-up window for "Application Type" is requested, verify that the flash file for the ECM is correct. An application type request means that the wrong flash file has been selected or an ECM recovery was performed. Do not continue unless instructed. A service magazine or special instruction for each machine model is available with the flash file information.

  7. From the pop-up window, verify that the proper ECM and flash file is selected and select "Next". From the new pop-up window, select "Start Download".

Do not disconnect while flash download is in process. Once the flash is completed, the machine will emit a tone from the console.

  8. Select "Close" once the flash download is successful. The connection of P1STC to the machine may refresh. This action is normal.

Wait approximately 15 seconds to re-establish communication between the Plus+1 Service Tool for Caterpillar and the machine. Continue to the next step once the "Connected" status is displayed at the bottom of the service tool screen.

Note: If the flash is unsuccessful, a recovery procedure may be necessary. A recovery procedure is only necessary if a flash procedure cannot be performed.

  12. Click the "Step 5) Download Saved Parameters..." (13) button. Allow the parameters to download to the Main Machine Controller.

Note: The download function happens quickly and may not provide a message or progress bar.

  13. Turn the engine start switch to Off and then back On.

Wait approximately 15 seconds to re-establish communication between the Plus+1 Service Tool for Caterpillar and the machine. Continue to the next step once the "Connected" status is displayed at the bottom of the service tool screen.

  14. Set the configurations if the Display was flashed. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Electronic Control Module (ECM) – Configure".

Calibration of the angle sensor is required if the Compaction ECM was flashed. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Machine Drive Power Angle Sensor - Calibrate".

This step completes a successful flash procedure. Continue to the next step if the ECM flash was unsuccessful.

Note: If the application (flash file) type does not match the application type already on the ECM, a mismatch error will be displayed. To address this issue, perform the following steps.

  15. Confirm that the selected flash file is the desired flash file. The selected flash file is listed in the "File Download" window. If the incorrect file was selected, click "Cancel" and repeat the process to select the correct file. If the correct file has been selected, continue to the next step. Enter the new software part number in the location provided.

    • Do not include dashes.

    • Do not include the revision number.

If the new software name is not accepted, review the service literature that specified the new flash file. Check if an alternate application type has been provided.

Try the "Recover a Controller (ECM)" procedure and repeat the flash procedure.

If the recovery / flash attempt fails, contact your dealership for possible consultation with Caterpillar. This consultation may greatly reduce repair time.

Recover a Controller (ECM)

Recovering the ECM may be necessary if the connection was lost during a flash procedure. Recovering the ECM may also be needed if the Plus+1 Service Tool for Caterpillar (P1STC) cannot communicate with the ECM.
