Procedure to Install the 458-3103 Precleaner Kit (Cab Powered) For Certain 988K and 986K Wheel Loaders {1055, 1408}

988K (S/N: T8E1-UP; L8X1-UP; LWX1-UP; TWX1-UP)

Introduction

This Special Instruction provides the information about the parts and procedures that are required to install the 458-3103 Precleaner Kit on certain 988K and 986K Wheel Loaders.

Do not perform any procedure in this Special Instruction until you have read the information and you understand the information.

Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before the removal of any component, clean the exterior of the component to prevent dirt from entering the internal mechanism.

Accidental engine starting can cause injury or death to personnel working on the equipment.

To avoid accidental engine starting, disconnect the battery cable from the negative (−) battery terminal. Completely tape all metal surfaces of the disconnected battery cable end in order to prevent contact with other metal surfaces which could activate the engine electrical system.

Place a Do Not Operate tag at the Start/Stop switch location to inform personnel that the equipment is being worked on.

Never weld or solder any charged components.

Removal Procedure

    (A) Cover assembly

  1. Remove and retain the cover assembly (A) and associated hardware.

    (C) Precleaner group
    (D) Band clamp
    (E) Hose

  2. Remove bracket assembly (B), precleaner group (C) and discard the parts.

  3. Remove band clamps (D), hose (E) and discard the parts. Refer to Illustration 3.

Installation Procedure

  1. Locate precleaner (1) on the bracket assembly (F). Secure precleaner (1) using hard washer (2), bolt (3) and nut (4).

  2. Connect hose (5) to precleaner group (1). Secure hose (5) using hose clamp (6).

  3. Connect other end of hose (5) to filter and duct group (G). Secure hose (5) using hose clamp (6). Refer to Illustration 5.

  4. Route the wiring harness (7) onto bracket assembly (F) as shown in Illustration. Secure the harness using clip (8), hard washer (2), and screw (9).

  5. Connect wiring harness (7) to existing harness (H) assembly from air conditioner group. Refer to Illustration 6.

  6. Secure wiring harness (7) using cable straps (10). Refer to Illustration 6.

  7. Install cover assembly (A) and associated hardware that were saved in step 1. Refer to removal procedure for Existing Precleaner Kit.
