Piston Pump Neutral (Vibratory) - Test and Adjust

Usage:

CP-56 C5P
Note: This test procedure will center the servo piston. Check the charge pressure before performing the following procedure.

------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury or death can result from sudden machine movement.

Sudden movement of the machine can cause injury to persons on or near the machine.

To prevent injury or death, make sure that the area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions before operating the machine.


------ WARNING! ------

Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.

Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.

Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, and the oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Personal injury can result from rotating and moving parts.

Moving fan blades and moving parts will throw or cut any object or tool that falls or is pushed into them.

Make sure no one is working on, underneath or close to an engine that is running. Make sure the area is free of personnel.



NOTICE

Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

  1. Drive the machine to a smooth, horizontal surface.

  2. Move propulsion lever (1) to the NEUTRAL position.

  3. Move parking brake switch (2) to the ON position.

  4. Move throttle switch (3) to the LOW IDLE position.

  5. Move engine start switch (4) to the OFF position.

    Note: The cab can be tilted in order to provide greater access to components under the cab. However, the cab must be lowered and fastened before the machine is operated. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, KENR6004, "Cab - Tilt".

  6. Remove bolts (5) and remove right cover plate (6) with seals (not shown).

  7. Remove bolts (7) and remove left cover plate (8) with seals (not shown).

  8. Assemble the tooling. Connect Tool (B) to Tool (C). Make two sets of Tool (B) and Tool (C).

  9. Connect one Tool (C) to low amplitude pressure tap (9) in port "Mb" on the vibratory pump.

  10. Connect the second Tool (C) to high amplitude pressure tap (10) in port "Ma" on the vibratory pump.

  11. Remove the plug from port "X1" (11) of the vibratory pump. Install Tool (E) in the "X1" port.

  12. Remove the plug from port "X2" (12) of the drum pump. Install the second Tool (E) in the "X2" port.

  13. Connect one end of Tool (D) to the tap in port "X1" (11). Connect the other end of Tool (D) to the tap in port "X2" (12).

  14. Disconnect "a" solenoid electrical connector (13).

  15. Disconnect "b" solenoid electrical connector (14).

  16. Move engine start switch (4) to the START position. Release the switch when the engine starts.

  17. Operate the engine at low idle for few minutes. Move throttle switch (3) to the HIGH IDLE position.

  18. Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with Tool (F). Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches 43 ± 5.6 °C (110 ± 10 °F).

  19. Move throttle switch (3) to the LOW IDLE position.

  20. Read the pressure on the gauges. The pressure on both gauges should be equal. If the pressure is equal, go to Step 23. If the pressure is not equal, go to Step 21.

  21. Loosen locknut (16). Watch the pressure on the gauges. If necessary, rotate adjustment screw (15) until the pressure is equal on both gauges.

  22. Hold adjustment screw (15), and tighten locknut (16).

  23. Move engine start switch (4) to the OFF position.

  24. Remove Tool (B) from Tool (C). Install Tool (A) on Tool (C). Make two sets of tools.

  25. Move engine start switch (4) to the START position. Release the switch when the engine starts.

  26. Operate the engine at low idle for few minutes. Move throttle switch (3) to the HIGH IDLE position.

  27. Monitor the hydraulic oil temperature with Tool (F). Operate the machine until the oil temperature reaches 43 ± 5.6 °C (110 ± 10 °F).

  28. Move throttle switch (3) to the LOW IDLE position.

    Note: Do not adjust the pressure past the rating of the gauges in the following steps.

  29. Loosen locknut (16). Watch the pressure on the gauges. If necessary, rotate adjustment screw (15) until the pressure is equal on both gauges.

  30. Rotate adjustment screw (15) clockwise until pressure at pressure tap (10) in port "Ma" just begins to increase. Note the angular position of the wrench.

  31. Rotate adjustment screw (15) counterclockwise until pressure at pressure tap (9) in port "Mb" just begins to increase. Note the angular position of the wrench.

  32. Rotate adjustment screw (15) to the center of the two positions that are noted above. Hold the adjustment screw in place, and tighten locknut (16).

    Note: Make sure that the pressure does not change when locknut (16) is tightened.

  33. Move engine start switch (4) to the OFF position.

  34. Remove Tool (C) from port "Ma" (10). Remove Tool (F) from port "Mb" (9).

  35. Remove Tool (D) from port "X1" (11) and from port "X2" (12). Remove Tool (E) from port "X1" and from port "X2". Reinstall plugs.

  36. Connect "a" solenoid electrical connector (13).

  37. Connect "b" solenoid electrical connector (14).

  38. Replace cover plates (6) and (8) and install bolts (5) and (7).
