3 Locomotive Electrical System Modification

Usage:

3.1 Wiring

FIGURE 2B

Individual SD40-2 and SD 45-2 locomotives have detailed differences in their electrical systems due to different optional equipment etc. These differences are of sufficient magnitude that a detailed wire lists of deletions and additions that apply to all -2 locomotives cannot be generated. Figure 2B shows a typical wiring diagram; it is included for guidance only to allow the individual locomotive operator to generate the detailed wiring information.

3.2 Modules Removed

The following modules are removed:

SB MODULE

GV MODULE

RC MODULE

TH MODULE

3.3 Components Added

The following components are required:

FIGURE 3

The VSTA unit is shown in FIG 3A, it should use a transformer of suitable rating and frequency response to handle an input impedance to the governor of 50 KOhms and generator frequencies down to the level that occurs at the idle speed of the engine (350 RPM). An alternative to a custom designed unit is to modify a GV module to provide this signal.

It should be scaled to provide a signal proportional to the DC output voltage of the generator at a gain of 40 millivolts (signal)/Volt (generator output).
