The Caterpillar Monitoring System sends input signals to the power train electronic control module (ECM). The power train ECM sends output to the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The Caterpillar Monitoring System and the power train ECM communicate back and forth on the CAT Data Link.

The Caterpillar Monitoring System indicates the status of basic functions of the machine. This includes the power train system.

The power train ECM receives the harness code input from the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The power train ECM determines the sales model of the machine from the harness code input. The power train ECM receives service commands from the Caterpillar Monitoring System. The service commands can change the operating mode of the power train electronic control system. The service commands can direct the power train ECM to read service codes that are stored in the memory of the power train ECM. The service commands can direct the power train ECM to clear service codes that are stored in the memory of the power train ECM.

A Warning Category 1 alerts the operator that a machine function needs attention. In this category, only the alert indicators will flash.

A Warning Category 2 alerts the operator that a change in the operation of the machine should occur as soon as possible. This will reduce the excessive temperatures in one or more of the machine systems. This helps prevent potential damage to the machine.

A Warning Category 2 causes both action lamp (5) and the alert indicator to flash.

Note: Do not operate the machine if the alert indicator and the action lamp continue to flash after investigating the cause.

A Warning Category 3 alerts the operator that engine shutdown should occur as soon as possible. This helps prevent injury to the operator or potential damage to the machine.

A Warning Category 3 causes both action lamp (5) and the alert indicator to flash. A Warning Category 3 also causes the action alarm to sound.

Note: Do NOT operate the machine until the cause of the warning has been corrected.

For the power train system, the Caterpillar Monitoring System problems that can activate alert indicators (4) follow. Problems that appear below in bold text indicate a possible Warning Category 3.
