- Articulated Truck:
- 735 (S/N: AWR1-UP; B1N1-UP)
Description of Change: An improved oil level gauge for the output transfer gear is used on the listed machines.
The new oil level gauge allows the oil level of the output transfer gear to be maintained more accurately. The new oil level gauge maintains the oil level in the output transfer gear at a lower level to the former oil level gauge.
Adaptable To: A new 292-4721 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) replaces the former 148-9390 Oil Level Gauge in the output transfer gear.
The new 292-4721 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) is effective on 735 (S/N: B1N712-UP). At the same time, a new 20 L (5.28 US gal) refill capacity for the output transfer gear is used. Disregard the refill capacity that is given in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the previous oil level gauge.
The new 292-4721 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) is a direct replacement to the former 148-9390 Oil Level Gauge on all earlier machines that are listed. If the former oil level gauge is replaced with the new oil level gauge, immediately check the oil level of the output transfer gear. This check is required because an oil level that was maintained correctly by the former oil level gauge will be high on the new oil level gauge and an immediate adjustment of the oil level will be required.
Refer to "Checking the Oil Level of the Output Transfer Gear with the New 292-4721 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) " when you use the new oil level gauge to check the oil level of the output transfer gear.

NOTICE |
---|
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products. Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates. |

Typical example of an 292-4721 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) |
The oil level for the output transfer gear should be checked at the beginning of the day. The oil level gauge has markings on only one side. The correct oil level of the output transfer gear must be checked when the oil is at working temperature. Before starting the machine from cold, a base oil level must be checked in order to prevent running the output transfer gear with insufficient oil. Refer to Illustration 1 for a typical example of an 292-4721 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) .
Checking Oil Level in the Transfer Gear Before Starting the Machine
Check the oil level before the engine is started.
- The machine should be parked on a surface that is flat and level.
Install the steering frame locks. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering Frame Lock".
- The oil level gauge is located in front of the upper pin for the oscillating hitch. Wipe oil level gauge (1) and oil filler tube (2) .

- Turn the handle on the oil level gauge in order to remove the oil level gauge. Remove the oil level gauge.
- Clean the oil level gauge by wiping.
- Install the oil level gauge fully.
- Remove the oil level gauge.
- Check that the oil level on the oil level gauge is anywhere between the tip of the oil level gauge and the level for "ENG RUNNING MAX HOT" .
Illustration 3 | g01291136 |
Note: The oil level gauge is marked: "LOW +2L" (3) and "ENG RUNNING MAX HOT" (4) .
- If necessary, add oil through oil filler tube (2) until oil is on the oil level gauge. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Lubricant Viscosities" and Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Refill Capacities". The refill capacity that is maintained by the new 292-4721 Oil Level Gauge (Dipstick) is 20 L (5.28 US gal). The new oil level gauge (dipstick) does not maintain the oil level at the previous refill capacity of 24 L (6.34 US gal). Disregard the refill capacity that is given in the Operation and Maintenance Manual for the previous oil level gauge.
- Install the oil level gauge into the oil filler tube.
Checking Oil Level in the Transfer Gear with the Oil at Operating Temperature
Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact skin. |
- Park the machine on a surface that is flat and level. Stop the engine.
Install the steering frame locks. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Steering Frame Lock".
- Start the engine and run the engine at low idle.
- The oil level gauge is located in front of the upper pin for the oscillating hitch. Wipe oil level gauge (1) and filler tube (2) .

- Turn the handle on the oil level gauge in order to remove the oil level gauge. Remove the oil level gauge.
- Clean the oil level gauge by wiping.
- Install the oil level gauge fully.
- Remove the oil level gauge.
- Check the oil on the oil level gauge.

- If necessary, add oil through oil filler tube (2) until the level is on the shaded area of the oil level gauge.
- Install the oil level gauge into the oil level gauge tube.
