3408 TRUCK ENGINE Caterpillar

General Information

Usage:

The 3408 Truck Engine is a 1099 cu. in. (18 liters) displacement, 4 stroke cycle, 8 cylinder, 4 valve per cylinder design turbocharged engine. This engine uses spin-on throw-away fuel and oil filters.

This engine is offered either with direct injection (DI) or with precombustion chambers (PC). Identification of the fuel system used on the engine is attached to the fuel injection pump housing.

Individual injection pumps, one for each cylinder, meter and pump fuel under high pressure to an injection valve for each cylinder. The fuel injection is automatically regulated by engine speed.

A hydro-mechanical governor controls the fuel injection pump output to maintain the engine RPM selected by the operator.

Inlet air is compressed by a turbocharger, driven by the engine exhaust, before entering the engine cylinders.

The engine coolant is circulated through the engine by a gear driven water pump located on the right front of the engine. One full-flow thermostat in a housing at the front of the engine provide for engine warm-up, and allows free circulation of coolant after operating temperature has been reached.

The engine lubricating oil is supplied by a gear-type pump. The pump provides full pressure lubrication to the engine internal and external parts.

The lubricating oil is both cooled and filtered. Bypass valves provide unrestricted flow of lubrication oil to the engine parts when oil viscosity is high, or if either the oil cooler or the oil filter elements should become clogged.

The starting system is electric and uses a 24 volt starting motor. Efficiency of emission controls and engine performance depends on adherence to proper operation and maintenance recommendations, and use of recommended fuels and lubrication oils.

Follow the recommended maintenance schedule with special emphasis on emission related components. Air-fuel ratio control and the high and low idle adjustments, and other major adjustments and repairs should be made by an authorized dealer.
