NOTE: This Program can only be administered after a failure occurs. The decision whether to apply the Program is made by the dealer. When reporting the repair, use "PS50054" as the Part number and "7755" as the Group Number. Use "96" as the Warranty Claim Description Code and use "Z" as the SIMS Description Code.

NOTE: This program covers the cost of repairing the engine that failed a turbo mounting stud, and also covers the update of the sister engine with the new turbo mounting studs.

NOTE: This Revised Service Letter replaces the June 12, 2000 (Revised July 2000) Service Letter. Changes have been made to the Termination Date, Action Required and to the 2^nd Note on the first page.

PROBLEM

The turbocharger mounting stud may fail on certain 3176 and 3196 Marine Engines causing an exhaust leak that can soot up the engine compartment.

Remove all 1337810 Studs from parts stock.

***** Affected Product *****

1 . When responding to a customer complaint regarding broken turbo mounting studs on a 3176C/3196, update the mounting studs on the sister engine via this Service Letter.

2. Begin the repairs and updates by removing the turbocharger from the sister engine (without failed studs).

3. Apply liquid penetrant to the turbo mounting studs of the sister engine at intervals during the repair of the failed mounting studs of the failed engine. This will make eventual removal of these studs easier and less time consuming.

4. Repair the failed engine.

5. Continue with the update of the turbo mounting studs on the unfailed, sister engine.

NOTE: Make every attempt to remove these studs in hull.
6. Remove unfailed studs

7. If stud(s) break upon removal, drill out and use EZ-Out to remove, or use Left Hand drill to remove. Retap as necessary.

8. In the event in-hull broken stud removal is not possible due to accessibility problems, remove the exhaust manifold. Remove the broken studs.

9. Complete the assembly of the sister engine with new stronger 186-0870 Studs. Use l43-973O Turbo Nut wrench to tighten the nuts to a torque of 55 N$ m (41 lb ft)

NOTE: For engines out of warranty, travel time and mileage may be charged per warranty guidelines.
